Underrated

I agree it is underrated. I rarted it a "10." However, its overall rating among all users was 7.3, which is fairly high. Assante is also underrated. One of the very best gangsters.

Honestly, this is the best mob movie IMO and I've seen every mob movie there is. It's not flashyike goodfellas or overdramatized like "the godfather". It's just a gritty pretty true account of Gotti's life. And Assante, again IMO, gave the best performance of any mob movie I've seen. He made it so good because he studied Gotti, spoke to people who knew him and got into character. I read one story that when Assante was offered the role he wanted to make it as real as possible but was worried about how John Gotti and his friends and how they would react to it. The story says he was given the OK to do what he had to do but someone told him after the movie premiered he did it so well, and did it without making gotti out to be this great guy.....that now some of Gotti's crew wasn't so happy with Assante. Said he looked over his shoulder for a good while.

I remember the night this premiered on hbo. I was 21 at the time and I remember telling my girlfriend I've got to go, Good movie coming on tonight on hbo and you won't like it so I'll see ya tomorrow. I remember just after watching the first scene I was like, "this is gonna be a bad ass movie".

But to your original point, this is possibly the most underrated Crime Drama of all time. No question. The mob wasn't made to be this great thing all the other mob movies had done to that point and that's what it is such a great movie. Really this movie and "Donnie Brasco" are The only two mob movies I can think of that didn't glamorize the life, but showed what it's really like.

Assante is brilliant as Gotti and this is one if the best mafia movies.
