Terrible

I’m surprised people enjoyed this crap. This was the second-last straw, before FDB, when I gave up on this fat fraud.

That arrogant demeanor, wearing ridiculous robes to hide his belly, his awful jokes and lack of chemistry with his costar (and a really forced attempt to come across as “just one of the brothas”), really badly edited fight scenes (the restaurant scene, and the final showdown don’t make any sense, chronologically), a bad guy who is nothing more than a skinny, bald, short George Bush-lookalike who wears suspenders, subplots that aren’t interesting, wasted actors (the guy from Shawshank), etc.

It’s like the filmmakers didn’t even care to get it right. Watch the final fight scene. The “metal” frame that impales the bad guy visibly bends and wobbles in his demise sequence. How unprofessionally-made can a mainstream film be??

I enjoy this movie only because of Bob Gunton. (AKA Warden Norton)

He's been acting for decades now and has appeared in several Broadway shows. He had been nominated for two Tony Awards but didn't win. He's also a singer/composer and plays the banjo and the guitar.

So yeah, he is woefully typecast and his talents are wasted to a certain extent. But then that is all to common for character actors.

Totally understand. As I mentioned in my OP, he was wasted here, and that's a true shame. He and Brian Cox are two great actors, underused criminally in this crap movie. I hope they were paid well.

Bob Gunton is a major reason Shawshank was such an excellent film, and I've appreciated him as an actor ever since. He's fantastic, but this was ridiculous.

I'm not saying he shouldn't do action (he was great in Demolition Man), but this was a waste of his talents.

reply

I love 'Demolition Man'. "Chief, you can take this job and,you can shovel it".

Have you seen 'Bats'? If you think Bob Gunton's talent was wasted in 'The Glimmer Man' you should see that movie. I think he was embarrassed by it. He was great though as the over-the-top scientist. Then there's 'Broken Arrow' which is another lousy movie he shouldn't have been in.

I actually liked him in Glimmer Man!!! At least he had a personality in it and a somewhat more fleshed out character!

"Do you mind?"

reply

He used to be on facebook so I sent him two messages, one of which had to do with his birthday. (This was in November,2012).

He responded a few weeks later with a very kind message and I was so thrilled that I cried for an hour. Apparently he visits this site and he had read the comments I made because he thanked me for my support and that he was humbled and delighted by them. He also said 'I want to wish you the very best'. That made me feel like a million bucks.

It's a little embarrassing though because I sounded like a schoolgirl with a huge crush. He knows I do because in my excitement I told him that I've had quite a crush on him since I saw 'Patch Adams'.

reply

Yeah, he always seemed like a stand up guy. I always figured celebs check out their imdb pages to see what's being said about them.

reply

I'm surprised he even remembered me.

I must not have made him weary of me because if I did he would not have felt comfortable enough to respond.

He also has a great sense of humor, which is always attractive.

I disagree with some of the points you listed. I thought the chemistry between Seagal and Waynes was pretty good and I actually really dug the fight scenes especially when Seagal is fighting the Russian mob and he pulls out his switchblade credit card. I am just starting to check out a lot of Seagal flicks and The Glimmer Man and Under Siege are the best ones so far. I am going to check out Fire Down Below today. I do agree with your point about the last villain's demise, It was badly edited. That being said, I really liked The Glimmer Man, I thought it was pretty funny and most of the fight scenes were pretty well executed in my opinion. 7.5/10 for me.

reply

You're going to be very disappointed with FDB. It's an incredibly boring film, and is basically just another egotistical vanity project, like ODG was. I do agree that Under Siege was good, though. It's clearly the highlight of his career.

reply

Yeah, Probably. I don't know why Seagal ever ventured into the pro-environmental flicks especially On Deadly Ground in which he makes a speech.

reply

Yeah yeah yeah, we get it, you hate this movie, yet it's still good enough for you to come onto these boards and waste 5 minutes of your life that you'll never back telling people how much it sucks.

It's a B-grade movie, he's stating the obvious, and it's not like his post contains anything that will be remotely constructive. All it does is illustrate what a sour-faced cow the OP is!

And what a grumpy old pratt the Steven Seagal Fan Club President obviously is.🐭

Why are you having a go at me? I'm not the idiot who started this useless, non-constructive board!

All threads don't have to be constructive. He's commenting on the obvious and allowed to be critical.

This was pretty much the beginning of the end of the big guy's theatrical release period.

As Steven Seagal Fan Club President, show some Buddhist-like good grace and accept that this vehicle is unlikely to see the big guy attain Nirvana any quicker.🐭

reply

I disagree with what you say. This movie was filmed in 1996. Some 5 years later, Steven Seagal was STILL releasing theatrical movies - Exit Wounds is the example that I'm referring to here.

Now, being the self-proclaimed President of his fan club doesn't mean that I try to mimic everything Steven does in real life... he's a proud Buddhist (which I respect) and I'm a proud Catholic... which I'm sure he would respect (if he knew me), but I'm no copycat.

This movie was one of those movies that is so bad, it's good.

I bought the DVD of this nearly 10 years ago after it was on tv once and I've never looked back. I love it :-)
