What's wrong with this movie?

The audience.

As the latest "commentator" on this movie also said I don't understand why this got such a low rating. It got a 4.9 out of 10? How is it that Van Helsing scores higher than this movie? Oh wait, because it makes you think...and most of the imdb boards are occupied by vapid 13-year-olds.

People can't look at this like a real movie. It's a metaphor. It's confusing because it's supposed to be confusing. You can't take it literally. She's not really floating in the room and she's not really Foxy Brown.

Anyone who doesn't get the reality vs. virtual reality theme doesn't watch enough TV. Or watches too much. I forget which.

My last comment is that Spike Lee movies can't be enjoyed by children. You can't explain something like this to the inexperience. This is about working a *beep* job, the unspoken oppresion of women, neglecting good friends, how we get off at work, fake phone conversations, stalkers--basically a reality as we know it.

I feel like Spike Lee's like that black guy on Sealab 2021 trying to warn everyone the engine is going to blow up and no one's listening so he just gets drunk and starts putting the crew's brains into little robotic dogs with boobs and replacing their brains with little intelligent Algaron mice.

I totally agree with you. Spike Lee has a way of making a movie seem unreal and sometimes, he adds sequences that dont have anything to do with the movie that may seem confusing. The only thing that I dont agree with is what you said about Spike Lee movies. Im 14 years old and I love his movies. There always so deep and understanding (or it could just be that I'm to mature for my age).

suzan-lori parks is also an amazing writer and her work is not considered mainstream (until Topdog/Underdog)... Her plays are beyond my ability to describe, but if you ever get a chance to see &/or read any of her work...don't miss out. she & spike made a great team on this film, cause, tho i like spike lee's films, his female characters usually fall short, and she is so insightful & funny.

I don't understand how it rated so low, but it also wasn't well received when it was out.

Okay I'll admit, it did feel a little depressing and lonely at the end. Not a real sense of hope that she'll be a successful actress some day. I probably wouldnt' watch this movie twice...

But maybe that's the point. It's more true to life. I mean how many of you thought you were going to be an astronaut when you grew up? Only to realize you actually have to be good in math (and I'm not talking about algebra) to even have a remote chance.

And to Traveljr I say, good for you! I still think you're young, probably not THAT mature for your age, but it seems you have a good instinct for movies and that's something that will probably...not get you far in life...but it'll definately ostracize you from your friends who thought "The Girl Next Door" was a life-altering movie.

I love Theresa as an actress and it's so sad that she is not working more (I predict that changing in a few years) and I did love the movie!

I understood the visuals and I liked the Dorothy Dandridge touch since I am a HUGE fan of Dorothy; I know Spike Lee is a huge fan of Dorothy too.

I hated what she had to go through as a Black Actress in the movie and it sad to say that a lot of Black Actresses and many others for that matter go through this crap of having to sell sex/body to get these crappy roles in Hollywood in "real" life.

I also think they made Theresa look very beautiful in the film; her clothes, her hair, her make-up was so classy.

Best,
Miss. T

I couldn't agree more. I'm glad I didn't see this movie until now because if I saw it in 1996 I wouldn't know what to think, but now that I'm grown and lived a little and could understand---I really fell in love with this film, it's nothing short of fantastic.

Well I understood the whole thing...I guess I was just bored. I love movies people hate and hate movies people love.

How pretentious for you to say that everyone who dislikes this film doesn't understand it, total BULL. I understand it, I simply hate it, hate spank lee and everything he's ever done, he's a no talent, over rated idiot.

Now do you get it?
