What is with this 'Joint' term?

Could someone explain to me why Spike Lee movies are referred to as "Joints?"

Is this some AA vernacular? And could someone explain to me why we have to create new words for words we already have? Are we just trying to be cool, or different, or is there some truly logical reason to create a word like this?

the word joint in the black vernacular means 'venture' or his 'thang' or my 'thang.'

everybody comes up w/ words or expressions to separate themselves from the crowd. spike is no different.

It is that & I believe a bit more in just the term 'joint' also has a 'Reeference' to Smokin' Ghanja!

Note the dismissive, perhaps unconsciously racist tone there... it seems to be a slightly milder way of saying, "What is this, some Black crap or something? Am I supposed to actually lower myself to knowing anything about how those people express themselves?!"

Why NOT? That's how the language (any language) grows and also becomes more fun. The more, the merrier. Are you wishing that slang could be outlawed? M'god how uptight.
