More movies based in Africa in Colonial Era ?

I love this era , any more movies based in Africa from this era ?

reply

You mean you want more movies over flowing with racist and fascist elements and where Africans, the indigenous and majprity population in the settings of these movies are made out as caricatures, villains, minute-screen-time set-pieces or no-name-brand supporting actors? How about no then.

That's not exactly what he was asking was it?

'Can you fly Bobby'

It's not just the indigenous people who are caricatures in this film. This film took what what a true story and adapted it to suit some modern day stereotypes of an American audience. The acting performance and accent Kilmer is a joke. The American great game hunter who lives with the natives is inconceivable. It portrays hunting in a poor light too. This is a much better story than the film--- which could have portrayed a range of human emotion including some dark facts about the slave trade. A missed opportunity discrediting at least one brave man just to pander to an American ego. Based on a true story my arse: if you want to say that at least try to do the story justice. This guy was a commissioned not some Irish nonce who didn't know his arse from his elbow. Films like this set the tone of some racial conflict when the true story is of many brave men building Africa's first railway.

reply

I agree about the acting, Kilmer was not very convincing and neither IMO was Douglas. They should've gone with someone else, maybe a British actor to give it some iota of honesty.

As for the racism, yes I suppose it was racist. The movie didn't tackle the issue of racism, it's more of a horror-action-thriller than a sociological study. Although it could have been.

Although having said that I do wish there were more films about Africa filmed in authentic places etc.

reply

Not racist, just not politically correct.

Mountains of the Moon from 1990 is one of the few movies dealing with this time period in africa .. There are a few good zulu war / british empire type movies as well, but very few about the exploration and colonization of Africa.. Which is really surprising since that era makes the white man / british empire / europeans look so bad , you would think the hollywood white guilt types would be all over it.

If you are intrigued by the whole british empire, exploration, meeting new tribes theme and it doesnt have to be in Africa .. I highly recommend The Man Who Would Be King from 1976 .. It takes place in pakistan or afghanistan in the 1800's .. Plus it has Michael Caine and Sean Connery in it so on top of interesting subject matter, its a great movie all around.

Check out the 1950 version of "King Solomon's Mines". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042646/
It's a classic adventure film set in roughly the same time period in East Africa, and the real hero of the piece is an African.

All of those are good, but another that nobody has named so far was the Rock Hudson/Sidney Portier classic, "Something of Value" about the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya in the 1950s.

There are also some of the Young Indiana Jones TV movies that were made from episodes of the TV series in the 1990s. Although juvenile and a bit goofy, it's interesting to note that they do not only take place in colonial Africa, but in colonial Africa during the first world war, which guarantees a lot of action and battles:

- Young Indiana Jones and the Phantom Train of Doom and
- Oganga, the Giver and Taker of Life

In addition there is another one where the child Indy is in a safari in Kenya with Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 (Passion for Life) and a couple more in Morocco.

The original Four Feathers from the 1930s is the better of the two versions as it is not riddled with political correctness.
You may also like the 1966 film Naked Prey where a European safari guide is stalked by cannibals. A very good thriller but not for the pc brigade.

What kind of douchebag wrote this? Talk about a chip on a shoulder.

No one has mentioned "Out of Africa"? It's a classic. It takes place in 20th century colonial Kenya, features a game hunter, and is also based on a true story. It's a bit long, but the cinamatography is great.

The John Huston classic, "The African Queen" should also qualify IMHO, though apart from Ms Hepburn and Bogie there weren't too many other humans in it.

Another classic - Hatari, also set sometime in the 1930s-40s, when the "white men" still ruled supreme?

If covert racism (nice white men saving the poor natives from savage beasts) is what anyone is looking for, King Kong and most Tarzan films should also qualify :)

...it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him

Can anyone tell me the name of this movie please? I saw it years ago and it scared the crap out of me as a kid, I only have vague recollections though.

I'm sure it was set in Africa but maybe later than the Colonial era. There was a bunch of white civilians and I think some army guys, escaping on a train and they were being attacked by a savage tribe (I think the train or the vehicle was somehow halted and they were all left to the mercy of the tribe getting pulled from it...) - it was pretty brutal from what I remember and some of the white women were being raped and all sorts :S

I don't think it was a particular video nasty as it was on late night TV in the UK, but was still pretty strong stuff.

I thought initially it might be Naked Prey but after watching some clips on YouTube I'm pretty sure it isn't.

Probably "Dark of the Sun" aka "The Mercenaries" a grim action adventure set in the 1960 era Congo. Directed by Oscar winner Jack Cardiff (Black Narcissus). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062863/combined

A band of mercenaries led by Rod Taylor and Jim Brown go into dangerous rebel held territory riding an armed train. Their public mission is to rescue Europeans trapped behind the lines, but the real reason is to recover a fortune in diamonds held at a mining town. Action and atrocities ensue.

See "Breaker Morant".
