Possibly stupid question...

... but could one view this as a prequel to the original X-Men movie? i.e., comics aside, could this be seen as a sort of "training day" for Jubilee & co. before they go on to appear in the movies?

You know, that's an interesting way to look at it. With the sole exception that Jubes ain't Asian in here, yeah, it can quite work that way.

What I would like is for a novelization of this movie. That would be awesome to read I actually believe.

Well, none that appeared in the movies aren't. Still, there aren't any real contradictions either.

Comics-wise both Emma and Sean were on the active roster quite a few times. Heck, Emma still is, both in Civil War: X-Men and Astonishing X-Men. And Sean's dead. And Husk used to be on a team, but for some random plottage reason she ain't now. Ditto for Chamber, although he's got a reason -- M-Day. He's de-powered and Apocalypsified now, on the pages of New Excalibur. Mondo's dead, Skin's dead, M is part of the new X-Factor... Penance vanished into a plot hole... Synch's dead... Dang, this must be the unluckiest kid team the X-geeks ever had!

(Dazzler? Dazzler was in Mojoverse at the time, with her hubby Longshot. When 'Shot got his memory zonked for the umpteenth time, she returned to Earth and back to singing (for example... in Deadpool v.3... #67, I believe). She's now part of the New Excalibur.)

you got to understand that different writers grab x-men and other and do thier own thing with it. You really can't jam them together. Try to enjoy them separately.

The only real noticeable contradictions I can think of are:

1) The age and ethnicity of Jubilee, but this can just about be ignored as the dating is not firmly set for any of the X films and Jubilee was played by several different actresses in minor roles in the X-men films anyway.

2) The dream world which is never mentioned in any of the X-men films but then again never explicitly said NOT to exist.

3) This is the big one: The mutant registration act. In Generation X its in effect and causing all sorts of trouble, making mutants hard to find for Trasks experiment and nearly getting Jubilee sent to "camp". But in the first X-men film Jean Grey is arguing against it while Senator Kelly is lobbying to bring the MRA into effect to protect the normal humans.

I like to think of this movie happening between The Last Stand and Days of Future Past. The Mutant Registration Act in this would be a precursor to what happens with the Sentinels later on.

The only problem is Jubilee. This is about Jubilee's first days with the X-Men, whereas with X1-3, we already see her. However, that can be easily resolved since X1-3 Jubilee's name is never mentioned.

Placing this into the movie timeline is not difficult. The age of Emma Frost lines up with her character in X-Men Origins. While Banshee already appeared in X-Men: First Class, he is never mentioned as Sean Cassidy. Though this is a much cheaper production, there are no real contradictions, at least any more than the actual movies contradict themselves.

A hardcore fan could see it that way, I suppose.
