strange screenplay

I wouldn't say strange, I would say very original screenplay. It definitely doesn't follow the Hollywood recipe.

swami,i agree. this is 6 yrs after your comment, but i have seen scores of irani films that are more 'typically accessible' i will say.The story line/plot was pretty darn simple but i think perhaps the value of the film lies in the visuals and the disjointed looks into a very foreign culture. I think I am not likely to ever understand more than that about Gabbeh. I wish I could ask a film-learned Irani about it (why so much repetition; was the old man singing traditional songs that mirror the story? why the lack of scenes and drama showing her escape, etc)

Personally the one thing I treasure in current Irani films is the understated but deep and shaded interpersonal dramas. So many of the Irani directors are easily as complex and lyrical as Shakespeare, Chekhov, etc etc. I hope you have gone on to explore more Irani films.
