Chris Penn's best performance!
I wanted to leave a message because I think this was Chris Penn's absolutely best performance.

Yeah, I agree, good that people remember his performance in this underrated film.
RIP, Chris Penn.
Next to Reservoir Dogs this is chris penns best performance.
his acting was top notch and when he sang he surprised the heck out of me, he was great!!!!
Rip Chris Penn you will not be forgotten.
I recently bought his for Gallo-who's great in it, and the excellent cast. However,Chris Penn is so riveting and real in this,he easily steals the film from all involved!
I remember Penn in 1984's 'Wild Life'-in which he was basically imitating his brother in 'Fast Times.'
Man,did he come a long way! For those out there that are interested in the acting profession, you should truly watch Penn in 'Funeral.'There is a stretch of about 30 min. in which he does not speak.Yet his body language reveals the torment of his character. This is extremely hard to do convincingly.Penn nails it expertly.
My favorite scene in the film is between he and Gallo. This is some of the best acting I've ever seen!Gallo and Penn -(the scene when Johnny comes to Chez's house and they argue)-play off of each other's acting skills. That scene builds and builds and is brilliant! The way Gallo is edging him on,getting in his face, provoking him,etc...Absolutely outstanding acting by both! The film has flaws,(you can see Gallo's eyes quivering in a couple of casket scenes),but is expertly played.
didn't know chris penn had died until reading this message board, very sad news. just wanted to agree with the first post, this was definitely his best performance, great film, highly underrated..
RIP Chris Penn
i also didn´t know until a short time ago, when i looked for "the funeral", because i watched it again this evening.
great film, great actors, great chris penn; sad that he´s dead.

ALL LIFE IS EQUAL
Actually I love Chris Penn in everything BUT this movie. This was the worst acting I've seen sice Cary Elwes in SAW. Way too over the top and not at all believable. Thank God Walken, Gallo, and an awesome cast of great N.Y. actors were in this to make up for it.
share^^^ how was that his worst acting? it was so real...especially when he snapped at the funeral after sseeing his bro in the casket...

hands down Penns best movie, ever , in my opinion. in DOGS he was awsome, but he didnt blow my mind. in the Funeral, well.....damn, he blew my mind all over the wall. i thought he did better acting that Walken, Gallo, and Del toro. if your gonna critisize his bad acting, then go to the f#ckin "Corky Ramano" page.....THE FUNERAL is a misplaced Gem in american cinema.
R.I.P.
I agree, Chris Penn was simply awesome in this film! It's quite a feat to be so good that you are remembered more than the other great actors in the film, actors like Walken, Gallo, etc, and long after watching the film! I still find it hard to get Chris Penns edgy, tortured performance out of my mind, even years later. I've seen Chris in many films, and for me anyway, this was his best performance out of all of them... A sad loss.
R.I.P. Chris Penn.

Even though I hate this film, a total waste of time and it left me in a bad mood. I must agree with you on this. Chris Penn was great!
There are no facts, only interpretations.

Didn't think too much of the performance, although I think it was the part rather than the actor. Seriously, how hard is it to yell all the time?

I don't think of him as an actor.
In this film all he did was yell.
Same way in the others I've seen him in.
