Have you ever seen a genre change like this?

I can't recall.

Like I said in the other thread, i'm going to show my housemate and it's going to be hilarious when it turns into a vampire killing *beep*

I was very happily enjoying up until the vampires, and then it was ok/boring. The effects kept me a little entertained, as they were better than most, but that's not really for me. I would've enjoyed it so much more had I not been waiting for vampires somewhere in the film. Crazy crazy movie haha.

I still give it a 7, that might be generous and could change to a 6 if I ever happen to watch it again.

But yeah, have you ever seen a genre change like this? If so, what movies? I find it hilarious.

Yes, "Psycho" does the same thing :)

It was probably the first movie to do this aswell.
FDTD and Psycho is nothing alike other than they both have a "genre switch" though :P

that's what makes the movie so great. and I love the cheeseball gore effects ala dawn of the dead savini brings to the table. a great movie for fans of Tarantino and B movies .

I don't know about genre changing, but there are a few movies worth checking out that take a left-turn, making you feel like you're watching a completely different film. Sometimes, it's the result of a false-protagonists (i.e. Psycho or Scream), but most instances is caused by a location or conflict shift (i.e. Full Metal Jacket or WALL•E) after the Act I or more rarely after Act II (i.e. The Departed or No Country for Old Men). It's what I call The Full Metal Jacket Effect:

- The Departed
- The Disappearance of Alice Creed
- From Dusk Till Dawn
- Full Metal Jacket
- Gardens of the Night
- Identity
- The Lego Movie
- No Country for Old Men
- Psycho
- Scream
- WALL•E

^Kubrick had a real knack for that. I'd add "Eyes Wide Shut" to the list.

First time I watched it a few years ago the "party" scene really threw me off but I couldn't look away.

I'd love to see you in the moonlight with your head thrown back and your body on fire.

The Departed.....how so?

The final 20–30 minutes (which is a good chunk of time) completely changes the tone and style once everything gets chaotic. Or maybe that was just the way I felt. ?

'Something Wild' does a massive turn - from a cookie comedy to thriller when Ray Liotta turns up.

reply

Came here to say this. I think, compared with the other films mentioned, the total genre shift of Something Wild is most like From Dusk 'til Dawn.

Predator.

Changes from a typical action movie with men blowing the *beep* out of everything, to a kind of chase/action horror film.

The Evil Dead Trilogy went from being a horror in the first one to being a horror with some comedic elements in the second to a comedy with some horror elements in the third. I know it's not through the course of just one movie but just thought I'd share.

No Country for Old Men? How?

I'll add The Wizard of Oz to the list.

The Crying Game as someone mentioned. Total change of genre. From war madness to love story. If we can call that love.

Full Metal Jacket - two movies in one. Even tehnically is not genre change, but was strange.

Life is Beautiful - from comedy&love story with happiness to a war&drama with
tragic events.

Some Martin Lewrence movie, I don't remember name. But it was comedy for a hour and half than suddenly become thriller.

But winner would be A Pure Formalaty(1994) with Depardieu and Polanski. That ending...

Could you be thinking about A Thin Line Between Love and Hate?

That movie starts off innocently enough....Martin's character being a hard breaking player...til he plays the wrong girl and she turns full psycho on him. Once she loses it the funny just DISSAPPEARS!
