Between the graveyard scene and his sudden appearance at the chapel, he's had no contact with either character, so it isn't as if he overheard them talking about going there. Was there supposed to be a scene that explained this that was deleted or left unfilmed for some reason?

You're kinda right, it is left unexplained, but it's possible he was just laying low and following them, thinking they'd lead him closer to a paranormal experience. Not a far fetched idea, after he saw the police car start driving itself.
