I'm confused about Patricia + Johnny

In the beginning of the movie, Patricia is running around the house looking and acting very frightened by being chased by this creature. It even comes out of the walls and tries to grab her and she's running and screaming to get away from it, but in the end, she seems very excited to see this creature which turns out to be her boyfriend Johnny and they get together to try to kill the others. What I don't get is when you find out she had been using the Ouija board and had Johnny's ashes because she was trying to bring him back, so what was the screaming in the beginning all about???

I just watched the Director's Cut and I'm not sure if this part was in the Theatrical Release but there's a scene in the abandoned hospital when Frank sees a flash back of Johnny and Patricia running around laughing. He's chasing her and she's playfully yelling "help, stop it!" but it's all games to them.

Maybe this explains the start.

I have inside me blood of kings - YEAH!

reply

I always wondered that. That was the one thing that I always questioned and now that makes perfect sense.

So say we all.

reply

Granted, I never saw this deleted scene, but she appears quite frightened, and not in the playful way, but in a I'm running around the house pleading not to be killed by this thing that's knocking over and destroying everything. If these are games, how often does the house need to be fixed and cleaned up?

The whole scene to me is a red herring to make her seem like the main victim. That bothers me because once you've seen the film, that whole scene doesn't make much sense. And what was the mother babbling about her being too young and having sinful flesh... and what? What was she thinking was happening? Ghost sex? Why protect her if she is evil?

I also don't get how Johnny is able to kill people with that cloak, and where'd he get it and how did he get out of Hell? And how was Frank able to rip her soul out of her body? Couldn't Johnny just have done that to people in the first place? I just don't get the soul eating, and most of the things the spirits can do. One second, they can only do minor lifting and moving of objects and the next they can rip people's souls out of them. How was Johnny able to pre mark people without Frank seeing? And how can they fall through walls and floors, but only some walls and floors... It just doesn't make sense.

Sure the movie is fun, in a family film way, but it has so many unexplained moments and plot points. I just can't see how it is so highly regarded compared to horror films, and horror comedies that make sense.

Frank had just died and there was the heavenly light. By bringing the body and soul into the light, he managed to bring the soul with him and leave the body behind.

I guess that it gives you the opportunity to kill your killer!

reply

Yeah, I don't quite understand the opening with how the film ended. The part where she is under the table and it bends is weird, too. That means the ghost had to be out in the open, whereas it was always inside of the walls/floors up to that time.

It's a red herring but one that makes sense if you've seen the director's cut.

"Why protect her if she's evil"

She's her daughter. If she's in her house under medication she believes she'll be OK.

"I also don't get why Johnny is able to kill people with that cloak"

I'm not surpised you don't get it because he doesn't and can't.

"And where'd he get it"

Hell. He's come back as an incarnation of the Reaper.

"How'd he get out of Hell"

Patricia used ouiji boards to bring him back.

"How was Frank able to rip her soul out of her body"

Who says he did? Johnny could stick his arm through people's chests so maybe Frank killed her by damaging some of her organs too before he pulled her spirit out.

"I just don't get the soul eating"

Me neither. Thankfully there's no soul eating in it.

"One minute, they can only do minor lifting and the next they can rip people's souls out of them"

What? Only Johnny and Frank do that. And what's this lifting crap. The first time Frank became a ghost he had trouble adapting to his surroundings but lifting?

"How was Johnny able to pre-mark people without Frank seeing"

Johnny wasn't pre-marking them. He had his victim planned and Frank had the psychic abilities to see who his victim was, because Patricia carved the number into their foreheads afterwards. Johnny wasn't advertising it for people with psychic abilities LOL.

"How can they fall through walls and floors but only some walls and floors"

What's this they? Apart from Stuart who got stuck in the door because his ectoplasm had dried up, the only ghost to fall through walls and floors was Frank because he wasn't used to being a spirit. Once he concentrated he knew how to adapt. Ever seen Ghost or other numerous supernatural movies? Same thing. Peter Jackson doesn't have to signpost everything.

"It just doesn't make sense"

It does to people with a brain.

"Sure the movie is fun"

Only thing you've got right.

"But it has so many unexplained moments and plot points"

No it doesn't if you actually PAY ATTENTION.

And what's this lifting crap.
He's talking about the two side ghosts who were lifting the bed and the babies.

The opening in the theatrical release still doesn't make sense when the movie is over. You don't have to be so rude to people.

"He's talking about the two side ghosts who were lifting the bed and the babies".

He clearly isn't as he stated "one minute they can do minor lifting of objects and the next they can rip the souls out of people". Only the Grim Reaper took people's souls.

"You don't have to be so rude to people"

I'm not usually but that particular poster has left three or four of the exact same pompous posts all over the board nitpicking things that are explained.

What the hell is a gigawatt?!

I thought he was talking about the spirits capabilities in general.

Yeah, that can get annoying.

reply

I know this post is old but whatever. I never saw the director's cut but I just assumed with Johnny being a psychopath there was some level of abuse in their relationship.

-Ah, here it is. "Breach Hull - All Die." Even had it underlined.

reply

she was faking being scared
"Touchdoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooown Auburn"

reply

I always thought the opening was the first time Johnny returned from Hell.

Patricia is frightened because a ghost she summoned actually showed up.
