Book

I saw the movie first, and adored it. 10 years later I read the book and hated it. Hate is a strong word I suppose. I just didn't care for it. It went all over the place, and sometimes it made me doubt who the narrator was, which caused great confusion.

The movie has always been one of my favorites, I love the setting of suburban "Oregon", I'm pretty sure this was shot in Illinois.

Anyone else read the book and not care for it?

It was shot directly in Portland, Oregon

The movie and the book are two completely different stories , about the only thing that is the same are the names of the characters. I enjoyed both but the book is a pretty grim thing and in it the girls really were a gang that commited some bad crimes if I remember well...I really enjoyed Joyce Carol Oates as a teenager because she hit so many things that young women coming of age go thru right on the head. You know that feeling of realization that you are attractive to the opposite sex and how truely frightening that all is while at the same time enjoying the attention from boys. The way she writes about this period in a girls life really resonates. So I do like her stories but they are usually very dark.

JennaLynne,

I liked the book, but the writing style was a little stiff.

By the way, I was an uncredited extra in this movie (students in the hall), and it was filmed entirely in Portland. In fact, the bridge scene created quite a mess of Portland traffic! I got a chance to meet a few of the actors and they were all great. It's funny, it was "before they were famous," and they were just regular people (except Angelina, she was still really cool but always surrounded by her "people").

Cheers!
