I seem to think she did in the end. Her real name was Sharon Bottoms and the son was Tyler.
Theres lots of info on the web so just google it, and you'll find the case in books on gay/lesbian rights. We studied it a little at uni.

A little over three years later since the last post, but I'm pretty sure Tyler is 18 or will be later this year. (He was 2 when the case first became public in 1993.)
Once he's a legal adult he can do or go anywhere he wants.*
Not only did Sharon Bottoms not regain custody, but they wouldn't even allow her partner to stay in the house during her son's visits.
That stench you smell as you drive through Virginia isn't just from livestock farms, it's their legal system.
(* and I predict at some point he's going to cut grandma off the same way she tried to cut her daughter's partner out of his life.)
