I don't get the low rating

I've seen this several times, enjoyed it always, and now again, with the grandchildren.

Yes, the movie is a bit simplistic and predictable. Yes, it's emotionally manipulative (is that always a bad thing, or what movies ARE)? And yes, the politics are mushy. But it's still a wonderful movie, that gets my cynical self every time.

I just don't get why it's rated so low.

I give it a 7.5-8 (rounded up to 8); it's a very nice animal-themed movie I remember renting from Blockbuster or the local video rental place a couple times as a kid, and then later seeing on TV again. Very cute, original, and well-acted with an uplifting (no pun intended) atmosphere and positive messages.
6.8 isn't too low, but it deserves the extra .2 to bump it up to 7.

I think the film works better if you watch it with kids.

Wouldn't necessarily say that. I watch it with a friend and I cry buckets, from the very beginning on until the happy end, happy tears even. It's very very entertaining, my personal favorite animal / family movie of all time.

6.8/10 is really very low. I give it a 10. The music and atmosphere is phenomenal, the geese are majestic. Oh I just love feel-good movies like these. There are just much too few of them.
