shareThe scenes of Radha (as a child) and her parents in the field of yellow (mustard?) flowers are really dreams that adult Radha is having over and over. After all the years of suppressing her desires and needs, Radha is trying to psychologically breakthrough by way of her dreams of herself as a child with her parents, trying to "see the ocean."
The girl is definitely Sita. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense anyway. The flashbacks show her as a child and how loving her parents were towards her and how they wanted her to understand the world by seeing with her heart. And only as a married woman she's starting to understand what her mother was talking about then. It is not meant to be her thinking though. It just illustrates how education at a young age influences Sita's later life and her will to break free from tradition and to see her wishes come true.
Isn't it a wonderful movie. I've seen it 5 times now and I still discover new allusions, symbols and references to what other characters have said about family and life.
In all honesty, this movie raised my faith in indian movies. it's such a shame that it was banned in india. it's what people need to see. these types of artsy filmd have the ability to change perception so much, and are accepted in america as a result. but it's unfortunate a movie like this, that is IMO needed in a country like india that has these issues, isn't able to be shown to a wide audience.
shareKapps73 is totally right. I just watched this film in class and we had a long discussion about it. The girl is Radha- you can tell by where the flashbacks are placed in the film. For instance, right after her Sari catches on fire. Really good movie.
shareAs far as her "seeing the ocean" ... I think it's a reference to her sexual awakening. Water is often used in literature to depict sexuality. In the beginning of the movie, Radha as a young girl keeps saying "I can't see past the field." But towards the end of the movie, after she has accepted her relationship with Sita, she is finally able to see the ocean.
shareIts rahda as a child. She even tell the story to Sita during the movie about how she was always trying to see the ocean as a child.
shareIt's definately Radha because the credits include Young Radha, Young Radha's Mother, etc.
shareMovie was not banned in iNdia.and all opposition occured because lead characters had names of Radha and Sita ,highest of Hindu goddesses.Imagine havin a gay movie with names liike jesus and paul or mohammad and ali.
Direstor of movie was requested beforehand to change the names but she refued,i.e. why all noise was created.
