Powerful love-making, seductions, opium, and blackmail gloriously abound

Innocence, deception, sophistication, and tradition entangle the characters in their tragic fates

Temptress Moon is the definition of an art film.

Director Chen Kaige is dazzling. He said once, My thinking about culture begins the moment it is in ruins

That is the perfect summation for Temptress Moon: the story begins from the ruins...

I agree, this is another great film from Chen Kaige. It's a bit hard to follow during the first viewing (at least, it was for me) but upon the second viewing, I caught a few things that I'd missed and was able to follow the story. I love that Chen is fearless in the topics he chooses for his films and that he never cuts any corners. I think he may well be THE finest film director of our time. It's a shame he isn't well recognized in the Us.

Chen Kaige is utterly amazing and I agree that Temptress Moon is one of his best films to date. Gong Li is exquisite as always here.
