NEVER WATCH THIS MOVIE EVER!

1996: The year the Ramones retired, and everything went down the toilet. I unfortunately came across this piece of utter garbage on a rainy day with absolutely nothing better to do (but in retrospect I see that there were a number of better things to use the forty years of crap for, e.i. picking the lint off my socks, tweezing my eyebrows, suicide, etc.). I don't know how anyone in their right mind could sit throught this piece of yuppie crap. The yuppie era is gererally considered to be from the late 70's to the mid 90's, but few people realize how many of these bit of subhuman trash still walk among us. My parents instilled in my siblings and I a deep-seated hatred for these creatures that continues to this day. When will they realize that no one gives crap about them or their stupid problems and emotions. Hear that, "Friends" characters? No one cares about your breakups/love triangles, so stop making tv shows and movies like this. Go sulk and put on an R.E.M. cd. You can tell this is going to be a waste of time as soon as you see the credits and notice how many people have three names. Again, don't waste part of your life with this cinematic fecal matter, and if you've had the terrible misfortune to have already seen it, don't worry, it's going to be okay.

this movie is great

I must say, you crack me up.
I love your wry sense of humor...
I also love this movie. I can't explain why. I just do. I think it's the underlying relationship between Frick and Ellie. I love the fact that his love for her is palpable, but she views him as only a friend. I think that's what he deserves... that even if he could have her, he'd still be miserable, and bring her down with him. So it's best that things remain as they are. I liked that there was more than meets the eye to most of the characters... well, Frick, Ellie, Arabella and Jordan... the others were just kinda there... but I liked it.
And, by the way, I wasn't kidding when I said I liked your sense of humor. quite witty.

I consider this movie very possibly to be THE worst movie I have ever seen.

My friends hate this movie, too. But you know how you can come in on a movie halfway through, but there's one scene that just captivates you? That's what happened to me with this movie. I came in from goofing off with my friends when I was in college, switched on the tv, and this movie was on. It was the scene of Frick and Ellie on the beach, and he made up the story of Delphus, who was turned in to a dolfin. But he still loved figs and raspberries, and there was a maiden who brought him these things he loved most, but could no longer get since he was a dolfin. And to thank her, he gave her a ride on his back through space. Yes, it's corny, but it's sweet because he was saying it for Ellie. and when he said the part about how everyone was warning her that it was dangerous for her to be with him, she knew that it was just what she needed. And that's how her relationship with Frick was. He was basically toxic to everyone else. and he wasn't careful with her, but his honesty is what she needed. Maybe I'm just a sap, but that scene was very endearing to me. That one scene made me fall in love with the movie.

Hey, Rusty!
glad someone shares my opinion. I also liked that there was more than meets the eye to most of the characters. I definitely think that Frick, Arabella and Ellie were the most defined characters, but it was really enjoyable to learn about the others, as well... how Brad paid someone to take a test for him so he could spend the weekend with some bimbo... that's awesome! and how Trey has had two girlfriends, two boyfriends and now is engaged to Jordan in the span of two years. But, of course, the best reveals were the reason for Frick and Arabella's divorce, and the tragedy of why Ellie was so fragile. It gets a little bumpy in between the good parts, but as a whole, I like the movie a lot.

Thank you very much. And I wish there were more movies like this out there. I adore ensemble movies. this one and Peter's Friends are two of my favorite movies ever. and Steel Magnolias. All very different films, but amazing in thier own way.

I agree. I only watched because Jennifer Connelly was in it, and that was a waste. Was her charachter supposed to be retarded? A the black chick with Billy Joel eyes? WTF? Horrible...

I'm not that proud of everything I've done, but I'm not that ashamed, either.

Yeah this movie was meandering, unbelievable, sappy, ect. Hard to follow too, I guess, because I didn't even know that Frick guy was married to the frumpy chick. Oh well.

It did leave me with one question though. What the hell are 'ledges'? They said Frick was injured by hitting his feet on 'the ledges' while swimming, but I haven't a clue what they mean. Underwater ledges? Ledges leading up to the beach? And is he supposed to have made it to the yacht? It's really sloppy storytelling.

Sounds like every religious flick I ever saw.

Let it be unsaid: insignificance is the locus of true increpation.

reply

Why don't you tell us how you really feel?

This is on IFC right now. I'm not watching, but when I saw Connelly was in it I wanted to look it up.

It was a boring movie. How many times can you see a group of friends sitting around talking? What I like about that kind of movie is that you get to see actors at the beginning of their career. Jennifer Connelly looked like a young Dimi Moore. Most of the people in the movie did a lot more impressive work. Maybe the rule of these movies is don’t see them until they are 10 years old or older.
