The one thing that really bothered me

Besides this being kind of a crappy movie overall, of course!

Why didn't Sally Field hang up on her daughter and call 911 immediately instead of running around like a maniac in traffic trying to find a phone? There may have been enough time to save her.

I tried to convince myself that in her frantic state she was only concerned with staying on the line with Julie in order to better hear what was going on since in the first few moments she wouldn't have been able to tell whether it was a robbery, abduction or other assault so perhaps she was hoping to hear if she knew the person or they gave any hint as to their identity. A secondary reasoning I forced myself to come up with was that she wanted her daughter her to be comforted by the fact that her mother was still there. Regardless of these reasons, the bottom line is, it was stupid. After the first 15 seconds of being unable to find a person with a phone I certainly would have hung up and called for help as opposed to frantically sprinting through traffic like a complete moron.

Now, I was only 6 in 1996 so I don't know how they worked then, but I found it surprising that her cell phone didn't have some kind of 3-way capability so she wouldn't actually have to hang up.

You guys must be very young and naïve.It would be difficult to hang up while hearing your daughter being brutally raped and murdered on the other end of the line.

You want to play the game, you'd better know the rules, love.

Well if I was six in 1996 then I'm obviously in my twenties now so that that how you will, however it has nothing to do with naivety. It seems to me it would be more difficult to sit idly on the phone -- the very same device which might have saved her daughter's life -- listening to the attack rather than calling for help the moment it became apparent finding a secondary cell phone was impossible.

And your maturity prevents you from seeing the illogic of Field's course of action?

reply

I believe you meant to say " you failed to see the illogical course of Field's actions."

reply

Pure and simple shock and not wanting to leave your daughter. She wanted her to know she was "there," as the girl was obviously going through a terrifying (to put it mildly) ordeal.

reply

Oh my god, really? Would you really hang up on your child, mother or friend when you hear thembeing viciously attacked over the telephone?

Honestly the Sally Field character isnt thinking about anything other then her daughter. You dont know how you would react if you were in that situation. Beside the fact that you're only viewing a MOVIE and its not real life so you are thinking "she should have HANGED UP and called the cops" but if she did that she would be thinking later on WHY DID I HANG UP she could still have been alive.

But she probably wanted Julie to know she was there and help was on the way.

But you know in reality no parent would ever hang up, and back in 1996 cell phones werent as high tech and advanced enough to patch a three way call so that the cops and 911 operators to listen in back then.

I very seriously doubt it.

Be thankful for every new day! [trendy]

Agree. As horrific it was for her mother to hear what was going on, she couldn't hang up on her-she needed to stay connected with her daughter, even if it meant hearing the screams. It's a parent thing. There's no f'ing way I would disconnect from my child in that kind of situation when there were plenty of people around with the capability to call 911.

reply

Exactly. When I saw this movie years ago when I was young and childless, I had to roll my eyes at the absurdity of her not hanging up and dialing 911. Now that I have a child of my own, I totally get it. No way in Hell would I ever hang up on my child being attacked.

reply

I doubt I could hang up on anyone in that situation. A while since seeing the movie, but didn't Sally Field very quickly find a woman who called the police to give them her address? The only thing I might have done differently is ask to use the phone to make sure the police had as much accurate info as possible while remaining connected on the original call.

reply

The girl was crying out for her mother and like any mother she refused to abandoned her, it was all that she could do.
