gene hackman is always villain

Gene Hackman is great actor.Problem is that I do not remember him playing a good character. He is always a villain character in the movies. It is like a tag sticked to him and he never can get rid of it :)

reply

Haha, I know, the moment I saw him on screen I knew he would be the villain.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

reply

he's got a phoney disturbing smile when he masks his intentions among people :)

actually, according to an interview he gave, he *prefers* playing the villain part. An actor of his stature could pick almost any role of a movie he wants, he likes being the bad guy.

Years from now when his obituary will run, will his most unforgettable role be one of the many villain roles or will it be Coach Norman Dale of Hoosiers? When I think of Gene Hackman, I think of Jimmy Chitwood looking at him saying, "I'll make it, Coach."

reply

I don't know if I would call Gene Hackman's character a villain. He's more of an antihero.

reply

^^Good point, I felt a bit bad for him at the end.

In one of the biggest '70s disaster movies, The Poseidon Adventure, he's the main character and a good guy. Also, as Popeye Doyle in French Connection, he's no angel, but technically a good guy.

reply

I wqas just about to post re French Connection too
Did you also watch it on the BBC?

reply

Yes I did, I've got into the habit of looking up films on here to see what people are saying about it!

reply

In The Conversation, although his character's profession (surveillance) is ethically dicey, he's not the villain -- in fact, he appears to be just about the only character in the film who has something approaching a conscience.

reply

Watch him in Mississippi Burning or The French Detective.

Its that man again!!

^^ As in: him not being the bad guy? 2 many movies like that, Heist, Enemy of the State.. & some years earlier: Crimson Tide, etc.

Btw., as rokgpsman had posted:

actually, according to an interview he gave, he *prefers* playing the villain part.
.. which would suggest that he has played both / and many roles.

Edit:
Eugene Allen "Gene" Hackman[1] (born January 30, 1930) is a retired American actor and novelist.

Just checked out why his last movie is listed as Welcome to Mooseport (2004); & man, is it sad to see that he won't be appearing in films any more.. Like an end of an era (all over again :)), every time one of these guys goes. :-f

Oh and BY THE WAY, someone *needs* to change his IMDB photo on his profile page!!

reply

I should had said French Connection 1 & 2 as well as The Conversation.

Its that man again!!
