Other big stars that die early

Anyone think of other movies where big name stars are killed off like Segal in this movie.

The two examples that spring to mind are Janet Leigh in Psycho and Drew Barrymore in the first Scream movie.

BTW: Think this was a great move, with so many folks expecting SS to work his Under Seige magic again. Totally changed the focus of the movie with Kirk Russell's novice finding his way as the unlikely hero

Christian Slater buys the farm early on in a film. The movie was okay, but I kind of would have enjoyed seeing him live to the end. He makes good movies and it was a shame he went out early. Sorry, don't know the name of the film but it came out within the last five years.

BTW I also was SHOCKED when Seagal dies off early in this film. Fortunately I am also a Kurt Russell fan and the film all-in-all is quite solid and entertaining.

reply

The film with Christian slater is 3000 Miles to Graceland

reply

That IS a fantastic film, but that is not the one I had in mind. The one I saw I cannot tell by looking at his credits because I saw it here in Germany. I have also never heard anyone talk about it, so I don't think it is well-liked film.

reply

Christian Slater also died early in Mindhunters (2004), and pretty gruesome way, too.

Holy *beep* Samual L. Jackson! Dies? No!

Seriously I did not know that thanks for ruining it for me.

I will agree with the previous post that it's great seeing Ben Affleck being gunned down, just as he is about to engage in the pompous douchbag facade he calls acting. Best part of the entire movie.

He was a big star during that brief period of time when Young Guns 1 and 2 came out. Since then his star has faded some. His death in MI was a bit of a surprise.

Christian Slater gets decapitated midway thru 'Windtalkers', by a samurai sword no less.
James Caan gets machinegunned in 'Godfather'.
Vin Diesel & Giovanni Ribisi in 'Saving Private Ryan'.
Angie Dickinson in 'Dressed to Kill' (obvious Hitchcockian ripoff).
Alec Guinness in 'Star Wars'.
Vincent D'Onofrio & R. Lee Ermey in 'Full Metal Jacket'.
Willem DaFoe in 'Platoon'.
Burgess Meredith in the Rocky sequel (II? III?).
Giancarlo Giannini in 'Hannibal' (ok, he's a big star in Italy).
David Cronenberg in 'Last Night' (Canadian end-of-the-world scenario).
Harry Connick, 'Independence Day'
Robert Loggia 1/2way thru 'Scarface'.
Jeff Daniels, 1/2way thru 'Speed'.
George C. Scott, 'The New Centurions'.

Technically, Bruce Willis in 'The Sixth Sense'.

[deleted]

Christian Slater is not decapitated onscreen or is his head seen.

reply

wrong. It's definitely in the uncut version 'Windtalkers' - this is a John Woo film, decapitations are like candy to him.
Rite after it happens, there's a shot of his head on the ground - the Navajo whom he was protecting looks into the decapitated head's eyes, before the Japanese take him away.

reply

Petersen died in the last 5 minutes of the movie. That's hardly early.

reply

Was Vin Diesel really a big star when SPR came out?

reply

Naah, he was completely unknown. Had some uncredited part in Awakenings and the lead in a movie he wrote and directed himself. Even after SPR he wasn't that well known till Pitch Black became a surprise cult hit and Fast & Furious made him a household name.

reply

BIG STARS that DIE EARLY.

Just about everyone you listed is not or was not a BIG STAR at the time and/or did not DIE EARLY.

I'm going to open a cross dressing store and name it "Susan B. Anthony"

reply

I agree that it was a shame that Steven Seagal dies rather quickly in this film because when I first saw the previews of this movie I thought "Oh man is this going to be a good action movie with Steven Seagal in it!" Then when he dies I was like in shock about it. This movie was good to watch and I enjoyed watching it.

reply

Though he wasn't big yet, Laurence Fishburne in "Apocalypse Now."
Christopher Lee died at the beginning of "Revenge of the Sith."
Gabriel Byrne around the beginning-middle point of "Dead Man."
Jason Scott Lee died pretty early in "Enemy of the State."
Michael Biehn died past the half-way point of "The Abyss", but it wasn't at the end; there was still a lot more to go.
Andy Garcia also got killed off pretty early in "Black Rain;" it seemed way too early for someone like him.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Bill Cosby in Ghost Dad
It is pretty damn obvious though.

Michael Bein and Carrie Henn in Alien 3.

Shouldn't even count since they were killed offscreen and no footage of the original actors is shown. Plus he wasn't a hot ticket item in 1992 anyways.

reply

Doesn't really count because he survives in the end by reentering his body, basically showing that he was never really dead in the first place.

reply

Biehn had more of a surprisingly early demise in 'The Rock'

reply

Yeah but he had a blast doing it didn't he? ;-)

Technically, Travolta died in the second half of Pulp Fiction. Putting the story in order, he died even later, since Bruce next went to escape, only to run into Marsellus and both of them run into Zed. Of course now, Zed's dead baby. Zed's dead.

Bruce Willis died at the beginning of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, but then his wife was the bad guy in that.

At the time Young Guns was made, Charlie Sheen was probably the most popular actor in the movie.

He is the leader of the group and gets killed early on in the movie.

Not a movie but in the TV series The Shield, Reed Diamond's character was killed at the end of the pilot which was unexpected especially since he'd been a major character on Homicide life on the street.

Also, Liam Neeson in Gangs of New York and Michael Caine is killed at the halfway point in Children of Men.

"Walk down the right back-alley in Sin City, and you can find anything...."

reply

You know, most of you are citing big stars who weren't that big in the movie they were in at the time.

reply

Good point.

Just because a star is hired to play a minor part or plays in the opening moments strictly to die (like Barrymore or Carmen Electra) doesn't make it a surprise they died early. That was their role.

Janet Leigh in "Psycho" -- very shocking at the time the movie was released.

I know people with the script. In fact, HEAVY spoiler: that's him in the trailer, who gets killed. The one that Clooney shoots. He's the body who J.K. Simmons wants burned.
