Madonna Desperately Wanted The Title Role

I heard about that during the time this movie was being made. From IMDb Trivia:

Madonna was cast after she wrote a long and desperate letter to director Alan Parker convincing him she was perfect to play the role. The letter was accompanied by a copy of her video for "Take A Bow" where she had specifically asked the director that it should resemble the '40s and '50s.

She eventually scored it, but the people of Argentina weren't too happy about that - riots broke out when Madonna did location shooting for the film around that country. Since she yearned so much for that role, I thought she'd churn out a stellar performance and possibly get an Oscar nomination to boot, but all she ended up attaining was one Golden Globe nomination. She also got into The Guinness Book Of Records for "Most costume changes in a film".

We were watching a different movie because to me she sucked...she couldn't sing it well and her acting was more like voguing...the director didn't know what he was doing either...

I've just been listening to the film score, and even in that it's clear she can't act -- there are just so many lines that she gave no meaning to.

I think I disagree with you about the director -- I would have liked to see what he could have done with a lead actress who wasn't so lumpen.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

The real Eva never forgot where she came from. Though she married way up, she was never embarrassed by having poor roots. Madonna, however, calls her fellow Michiganders "provincial." Snob.

Interesting Trivia: When Madonna first arrived in New York she tried to get a role in Evita. Supposedly the director was not impressed and basically said she would never be cast in Evita.

After she made the movie she sent him a copy of the film.
