So did this flop¡?

It says the budget was 55 million and it made 50 million? That's strange because I don't remember Evita being considered as a flop.

It did sub-par business in the US but it did much better overseas.

Domestic Box Office: $50,047,179
International Box Office: $101,900,000
Worldwide Box Office: $151,947,179

Domestic could have been much bigger if it went into wider release in early 1997. Add the video/DVD rentals and sales and TV rights sales and it was a very successful picture financially.

and the soundtrack sold 11 million copies !

I just watched it again today and got curious about this again. They did hope it would do better in the US, but the overseas box office made a lot more than expected as did the CD and DVD sales.

but they don't seem to care about the international box office, but this was still seen as a triumph for Madonna.

I don't see why international doesn't seem to matter. Money is money. Madonna should have been nominated and gotten the Oscar. She did get a Golden Globe, but she should have gotten an Oscar in my opinion. As I see it, it was one of the biggest robberies in Oscar history, along with Judy Dench for Mrs. Brown,Bette Midler for the Rose and Robert Duvall for the Great Santini.

Many films had good box office internationally but flopped in the US and didn't get sequels because of it.
