People would hate this

I would be willing to bet, that if absolutely nothing changed about this film. Same exact script, directing and everything, except no name of Woody Allen, people would call this movie what it is, garbage. The name Woody Allen makes some people love the movie without even seeing it.

No one else could have produced a movie like this in the mid-90s so it's a moot point. Allen deliberately chose actors who weren't musical performers, and alledgedly even had to ask Goldie Hawn to "sing a bit more out of tune" because her singing voice was so good. Personally I love this film very much, it's far from Woody Allen's best movie, but I can watch it over and over and frequently do. To me, this movie is like a ninety minute endorphin drip. It's a shame you didn't like it, but it's certainly not garbage.

It's a great movie, interesting from the first moment;
a very funny and intelligent portrayal of characters and situations in a musical comedy format.
Dialogues, music and beautiful images of Paris, Venetia and New York combine to entertain and inspire a good feeling.
It is not Woody Allen top movie but I could see it and enjoyed time and again.

I bought this without having ever seen it. Figured how can you go wrong with that cast. I couldn't even finish it. It was that bad. I wouldn't spend my enemy's money on this. My first and last Woody Allen movie. Cinema genius my arse.

(not so, Neobowler) Stupid Flanders, I am in complete agreement with your appraisal of this joyfully pleasant flick with two small exceptions:make a better choice of dubbing for Drew's voice and do not allow Julia Roberts to sing(?) a single note.

No way - it's a brilliant, inventive, creative, adorable movie. It would get a great response regardless of whose name was on it.

Actually, I saw it again only recently and was pleasantly reminded of how good it is. So many great touches - the Indian cabbie singing in Hindi, for example, just bowled me over. And the Halloween sequence - when I first saw the film in 1997, I didn't think much of it, but now I love the kids' performances and the way Woody uses the songs.

A great film.

I cannot tell a lie, especially when it comes to Woody Allen: This is a thoroughly entertaining film with some excellent production numbers, witty dialogue and amazing cinematography. Still, Woody has done much better, but he set the bar so very high. 8/10 stars from me.
