How Long Is Jack Nicholson In This Movie?

How long is Jack Nicholson's character Garrett Breedlove in this movie? I loved Terms of Endearment because of Jack's performance, so I was wondering whether or not to see this movie.

Hiya! I'm a huge Jack fan like you. I got The Evening Star a few days ago on DVD, and Jack is in it for only four minutes towards the end, but if you are as big a fan of Jack as me, buy it. Believe me, it may be a short cameo, but it's worth it. He looks great, he has some funny lines and the scenes he is in with Shirley MacLaine are magic (they were great together on Terms of Endearment). You should watch The Evening Star anyway, if you have seen Terms of Endearment, because it's the follow-up, it's almost as good and it's just as sad.

Thanks for your help! I think he should have been a main character in this movie as well. He was great as Shirley MacLaine's love interest.

Actually I don't understand how Nicholson didn't get a bigger part. After all, it isn't exactly his style to turn up in cameos (at least from the 90's). He's too strong for such appearances.

Also, his preformance seemed to be a bit peculiar. Almost felt that he expected more somehow and didn't wan't to be involved. Does that has anything to do with JL Brooks not being involved too?

Nicholson was working on at least two other films at this time (Sean Penn's "The Crossing Guard" and longtime collaborator Bob Rafelson's "Blood and Wine" -- both far superior films).

My suspicion is that JN did this as a favor to Warren Beatty -- one of his oldest friends (and MacLaine's brother of course).

I would imagine he was compensated quite well for the appearance and the movie would have been made with or without him- so when you get a chance to reprise a role that won you an Oscar and get a nice paycheck out of it, and your appearance will be short enough where you or your character won't get any blame if it fails, you would probably take it. The movie wasn't as strong as Terms of Endearment to begin with, although somehow I like it better (?) and the scenes with Jack & Shirley are just awesome. I'm very glad he did this. Quite funny as well, the Lakers were in Houston to play the Rockets during the filming and - you guessed it- Jack had to be excused so he could go see them play.

I know, I wished that he had a bigger role in the movie but I still enjoyed it.

Long enough to collect a paycheck, and not a second longer.

I've only seen this movie once and that's when it first came out. I remember two things specifically about his part in this movie. He meets Aurora for the first time in years at the gazebo at her house, the same place he confessed to her in the first movie that he can't make a commitment to her. And for the second part, he shows her a picture of a little girl calling her his pride and she declares "she must have been a beautiful bride".

I just timed it.... 7 minutes.

Well, seven minutes of Nicholson contributing a solid performance is worth a lot. His scenes with Maclaine are terrific.

I feel as though lately, he just shows up, tosses out a couple of trademark gestures--eyebrows, rictus grin--and calls it a day.
