I'd love to get this too.

BTW, when this aired on PBS in North America, it was re-named "Interview Day" (and no, it's not avail. on DVD under that name either). But ... does anyone know the significance of the original title, "Eskimo Day"? Is that a common expression regarding uni interviews in the UK?

reply

American here.

I saw the movie when aired on local PBS station years ago.

Searched recently, found, and obtained a copy -- just the film and not the extras (as also wanted).
(email me for details, [email protected])

I am now on the search for the sequel, "Cold Enough for Snow" by the same writer.

isn't it a reference made to old Eskimo people being left on an ice flow? so, in Eskimo day the parents feel similarly left behind and useless when they're children go to Uni... could be wrong, it's been a while since i saw this. Loved it though, and for some reason it's been on my mind today.

Yes, ros tate, that's what is being referred to in the original UK title. In a poignant monologue near the end, Shani (Maureen Lipmann) asks her husband, with a little fear, "What will we do now? Now that we're on our todd. What will we think about?"

I'm American and also love this tender film. It's first transmission in America was in the autumn of 1996, I had taped it then; but somehow, little by little it was eventually taped over with other programmes. Then, nearly three years later, I was in very rural America in which ariel reception was non-existant, I found out by chance that "Interview Day" would be retransmitted later that evening. I got in my car with a blank VHS tape and drove 100 miles to my brother's house just to record a good copy. I'd love to see the sequel which has never been transmitted here in America.

It's on BBC 4 at the moment, may well be repeated or available on iplayer

Just watched the BBC4 repeat, and enjoyed quite alot of it. Some of it annoyed me a little, but it was generally very good. I'd like to see the follow-up, now!
