In the movie, when this was supposed to have happened, were bras really worn by women en mass in this time?

Depends on the country and I imagine the age and financial circumstances of the women.
During war? I suppose the women in the military did but civilians? Perhaps not, it being wartime and all.
But they would have worn either a chemise or a slip.
