Paul McGann was wonderful
His first appearance as the Doctor was as strong a performance as any actor has ever made in his opening story as the Doctor.
My opinion might be a subjective one, but all opinions are.

Yep, it's still my opinion that his first appearance as the Doctor was as strong a performance as any actor has ever made in his opening story as the Doctor.

Matt Smith also hugely impressed me in the 11th Hour, and I'm not a particularly big fan of his Doctor...
I'd also argue that through his adventures in the books and audios the 8th Doctor has arguably been developed into one of the most interesting and admirable incarnations of them all, and his final fate in NOTD was i.m.o perhaps the most tragic and doctory of them all...
Good point.

I don't think I can accept the half human, the romantic scenes, so unlike any Doctor
The concept was great, the regeneration worked. I thought the Master was even more evil than ever before.
I have to wonder if the BBC had picked this up, and taken Paul how they would have treated this
Oh she could never have traveled with him
"I don't think I can accept the half human, the romantic scenes, so unlike any Doctor"
It was a blueprint for New Who - only with more class.
And the half-Human factor finally explains why he's always had such a special interest in an obscure little nothing like Earth.

So, you believe that the Doctor actually is half human? Yet can be President of Gallifrey? Personally, I discount it as a throw away line but it doesn't really matter
shareLike I mentioned in another thread, read the graphic novel The Forgotten. He claims that the line was simply a lie. That's canon in my head.
And I agree with ant-mac. McGann is marvelous in the role. I wish he could have had a better script. I really need to get some of his audio plays, but I've been scared to get sucked into the Big Audio vortex. I know I'll never get out.
A lie? Ok, I can go with it, not that it matters, McGann may have been a good Doctor, but without even 1 season, no way to judge, and to be honest graphic novels, well, I am not that into that
What I love most about Doctor Who, there are so many variations of Doctors, companions, story lines, something for everyone
"Like I mentioned in another thread, read the graphic novel The Forgotten. He claims that the line was simply a lie. That's canon in my head."
What is or is not canon is open to endless and futile debate.
For myself, it is only what appears in the TV series that counts.

"So, you believe that the Doctor actually is half human? Yet can be President of Gallifrey? Personally, I discount it as a throw away line but it doesn't really matter"
Why shouldn't he be president of Gallifrey?
This is an alien civilization with an alien culture. Who knows what rules or regulations are or are not in existence.

I believe he is NOT half human.
share"I believe he is NOT half human."
And I believe that he is.
However, what does that have to do with his presidency on Gallifrey?

In my world, I don't think a person that is not a full native born would be elected, plus it seems to me that the film that depicts that is totally out of whack with both classic and New. It had a purpose and failed.
I prefer to think of the Doctor as Gallifreyan amd you choose to think of him as half human
Seems we differ, oh well
Looking forward to the new season and hopefully the last of 12
In my world, since the turn of the century, we've already had at least two prime ministers who were born overseas. It is enough that they are citizens of my country.
As for the TV film being out of whack with both Classic Who and New Who... Well those two eras are out of whack with each other too. American Who is like a halfway stage between the two and it had a very strong effect on what was to come in New Who.
Personally, I thought the idea of the hybrid was brilliant. It finally explains why an individual who can travel anywhere in space and time spends most of that time on Earth, in the UK.

I totally understand that you are using life as a correlation and every US President has nationalities from other countries also
However what about Monarchies? The Queen of England, or Kings of other countries.
To me, DW is sci-fi and it lowers the admiration for me to think he is half human, he's better than that, but..... We Differ, I also believe American football is the best sport in the world,
"I totally understand that you are using life as a correlation and every US President has nationalities from other countries also"
That's where all fiction gets its inspiration from.
"However what about Monarchies? The Queen of England, or Kings of other countries."
Throughout history, Kings and Queens have often come from other countries, especially within Europe. Even today, the Queen of England is married to a Greek.
"To me, DW is sci-fi and it lowers the admiration for me to think he is half human, he's better than that, but..."
Species isn't the most important thing to me. It's their words and deeds.
"We Differ"
That's true.
"I also believe American football is the best sport in the world,"
Isn't that the sport were they all wear helmets and padding like a bunch of sissies? In Australia, they don't wear protection - or the bare minimum - when playing Aussie Rules or Rugby. However, they did introduce the blood rule a few years ago to make players come off when they were spilling blood everywhere.

In Australia.... and where else?
In America all you have to do, is go to Chicago, and on every other street corner you see the same thing except they leave their dead in the streets
"In Australia.... and where else?"
Well, Rugby is played in several countries.
"In America all you have to do, is go to Chicago, and on every other street corner you see the same thing except they leave their dead in the streets"
I just thought that was the standard policy with regards to American healthcare before the introduction of Obamacare.

oh I know, but Rugby will never generate the $$$$ I don't think, even believe some rugby players come over here and play football, they are kickers, so not to have to get tackled
share"oh I know, but Rugby will never generate the $$$$ I don't think,"
But can you prove it?
I don't know if there's any way to really know. One is played in a single nation, the other is far more widespread. In any case, Soccer dwarfs both American Football and Rugby when it comes to overall earnings.
"even believe some rugby players come over here and play football, they are kickers, so not to have to get tackled"
The fact that a handful of athletes from other football codes have joined American Football is definitive proof of absolutely nothing. Athletes from other football codes have joined Australian Rules Football, but it's still a football code played mainly in just one nation - for now at any rate.
