How did Stephen become 'Kim'

Getting technical here - I'm intrigued to work out how the actor Stephen becomes the naked "Kim" so convincingly. Is it just an exceptionally good makeup job, with perhaps a bit of post-production tweaking, or did he take his acting art so far as to actually take hormones temporarily to get the authentic body shape?

reply

I'm hardly an expert on women's breasts, but they looked convincing to me in the film...in fact, I thought she looked hot as hell. I don't know any of the detail on the Stephen/'Kim' makeover, but the Trans people were blasting the latex work on the actor over on the "Soldier's Girl" board.....I would consider them to be experts in this issue.

In the Special Features section of "Soldier's Girl", there is an excellent piece showing how Lee Pace is transformed into Calpernia Adams. I would imagine the same techniques were used to transform Steven Mackintosh into Kim Foyle. (The effects of female hormones are not temporary, and I imagine Mackintosh's wife would have had something to say about such drastic measure in persuit of his craft!)

reply

Well, like I said, the trans peeps were blasting Pace's breast job as 2nd rate, if you were to look closely. Personally, I think both Pace & MacKintosh looked great in their roles.

reply

Yes, its easy for people to criticize and pick away at the details. Neither 'Soldier's Girl' nor 'Different' were big budget films. Given the confines they were working within, the make-up artists did a wonderful job. Besides, as a viewer, I knew beforehand that Pace and MacKintosh were male, so I was more concerned with the story line than the nit-picky details behind the realism of the prostheses.

I guess some people just like to complain...

reply

I honestly thought that both actors were real trans peeps and/or had taken the female hormones for their breasts (shows what I know)....I wasn't familiar with their previous work, so I didn't know differently. Well, in all fairness, the real trans people do go through a hellish change, especially if they get the surgery....so that gives them some right to compare....although yeah, they were just movies on limited budgets and I would bet, quite a bit was spent on body makeup-or whatever it's called.;-)

Isn't Pace actually a transgendered female?

reply

Not as far as I know. Someone did say he was gay, but definitely male. (In the special features on the DVD, it shows some of the make-up and prosthetics required to make the transformation into Calpernia. Although tall and slim, he's definitely not a TG).

reply

That confirms what I know/heard....could be gay, but definitely male. According to the TG peeps, the real Calpernia is/was gorgeous, petite and VERY female looking in every way.

Pace is hot, I'd go out with him in a heartbeat, dressed like that, but then I recognize the male in him.;-)

reply

Interestingly, there are a number of photos on the iMDB site of Lee Pace, and I wouldn't have recognized him in a million years as Calpernia. Whoever did the casting for the movie had an incredible ability to see the potential... must have been the bone structure :)

Anyway, if I had Pace's bone structure, I would be one happy gal.

reply

As to him being gay, well he is married with 3 kids...but then we all know in Hollyweed that doesn't mean a thing. Just look at DD (not Perignon) and Tony Perkins...both gay men with children.

Um... yes the results of female hormones ARE temporary. That's why transexuals have to take their hormones for life. If they stop taking the hormones, their bodies will revert back to their original form...duh!

I met a trans-sexual who kept going back and forth between the two states, male to female and back again, simply by stopping the hormones for several months. Thi sis not exactly az RECOMMENDED practice, but it is possible.
If you are a guy on estrogen,, your beard stops growing. If you stop the estrogen, your beard comes back etc...

reply

Transsexuals take hormones for life because hormones are a necessary component for humans. One could develop osteoporosis otherwise. A hormone blocker (that blocks testosterone) is taken along side estrogen. Body Hair development would increase once again/ get thicker if one was to stop hormones.

The rest is not temporary. Breasts don't shrink back to normal, redistribution of fat remains changed, and other details.

What never changes is your height, beard, or voice. One has to take electrolysis for facial hair and voice training for the voice.

I can say for a fact that Steven Mackintosh never touched hormones while working on this film. With that nudity scene, I was sure they had a cis-woman film the scene and they superimposed Mackintosh's likeness on her head. Either that or the make-up work was fantastic.

reply

There was kind of a gauzy look to the naked Kim scenes, like Steven was filmed with a special lens to make any lines in the presumed quasi-prostheses blur into his skin.

One thing I found odd was the scene in which Prentice and Kim are lying in bed after having sex. The scene at shot from an angle which makes it look like Steven is wearing some sort of face mask which does not appear to be the case in other scenes.

Your are all morons. It's a body cast or body suit or really good make up. How do you think The Wyan Brothers got to be white in "White Chicks" or Martin Lawrence became "Big Momma", etc.

reply

The breasts don't look quite right - too unmoving.

The curve of the hips looked quite female to me when naked - when dressed it looked less so.
