I don't think anyone "believes" stories like this. It's a high-style thriller.
I lament the fact that such drama is lost among many literal-minded, "reality"-obsessed Americans. We as a whole do not value or comprehend the very European artistic sensibilities that gave birth to this film's predecessor.
Kudos to the filmmakers for daring to make it, despite the clamor of artless Westerners. It's a beautiful, hallucinatory film. Not intended for reality, folks.

I file this one under 'suspension of disbelief'. That kind of thinking went a long way for decades.
I watch and like it for what is, not for what it might make me think. If that was what I was after, I'd watch something else.
I thought it was good up until the ending, which was immensely stupid and bad. I thought Sharon Stone was good and well cast but Isabelle Adjani was terrible. Why couldn't they just stick to the original ending?
