Was this supposed to be funny?

This is not sarcasm - about 30 minutes in I started to wonder if this had gone beyond tongue-in-cheek and was trying to be funny.(?)

Assuming not then it's a pity, there are some cracking actors/esses involved but I kept waiting for Lloyd Bridges to jump out and say "don't call me Shirley".

And those green/red numbers worn by Sharon Stone do give some weight to the comedy element...

there are some elements of "dark humor" in the film.

I wonder the same thing. Kathy Bates' character was really quirky and funny, and there were a few moments that I was chuckling - I mean, that sex ed video, come on! It just seemed so random and out of place to me, I couldn't help but laugh.

With gorilla gone, will there be hope for man?

You're making a good point. The main argument between Sharon Stone and the director was Sharon thought that the movie should be more towards 'black comedy' but the director insisted making a 'thriller'. They should've heard her suggestions, because while the 1st half of the movie was good, the 2nd half crumbles, especially those 'thriller' scenes.

I THINK it was supposed to be serious but did anybody catch the outfits Stone wore while teaching classes? She was dressed like a dominatrix! Also the dialogue was horrid, it was slow-moving and just a travesty when compared to the original. I was one of the few idiots who paid full price to see it in a theatre and I remember the audience breaking up at the end which was SO incredibly stupid and over the top that you thought they were kidding! This should just be buried and forgotten. Stone herself has bad mouthed this one.

Did anyone catch the outfits Stone wore while teaching classes?? I've watched this movie OVER AND OVER again for that very reason!! Her outfits are insane. In fact, she tramples through this movie with such comedic vigor I really have to agree with those who say she wanted it to be a black comedy because she's doing all she can to make it one. It's a shame the movie takes itself too seriously because there is one damn fine campy black comedy lurking inside here, and I'm not kidding.

I thought it was hilarious and the only decent thing Stone ever did. I guess even she herself didn't know she was a comedienne.

Why the *beep* TRY to remake perfection?
The original scared the HELL outta me and this one makes me laugh...what the hell
Oh well they did it with Psycho too

I was laughing quite a lot. I mean, it was obvious from the beginning that this movie isn't going to be serious. Just look at Sharon's clothes or read this quote:

Nicole: Killing him is a good thing. Like planting a tree.
Mia: Maybe there is a God.
Nicole: What are you talking about?
Mia: I haven't believed fot so long... So when the pool was empty I thought: maybe there is a God. And He knows what we did. And He's coming for us.
Nicole: It's not God, Honey. That's a lady detective with one breast.

It's interesting to read that Sharon Stone wanted it to be a black comedy, because I really think it could've worked. Still, I think her and the rest of the cast gave very good campy performances, which is the main reson I liked the movie to some extent.

Anyway, my suggestion for everyone who is going to watch this movie is to not take it seriously. That is probably the only way to enjoy this movie to some extent. Oh, and don't try to compare it to Les Diaboliques.
