pointless remake


by vacillating uneasily between realism and old studio theatricality, this movie works as neither true thriller nor dark comedy. stone's performance similarly veers between the two and her line readings are often so overstated and tone deaf she sticks out sorely, as if acting in her own movie. meanwhile, adjani's character is so damn wan, it's painful. I'd avoid this one.

I disagree. It's pretty good. Not as good as the old French version. But it's a pretty good crime suspense.

If there's a weak link, it's Sharon Stone, I think. Simone Signoret gave such a performance in the original that it greatly added to the suspense and mystery.
