Has anyone ever written to God in the history of humanity?

It seems like anyone who believes would save the stamp and pray instead.

I am a Postal Worker and I once saw a Post card writen by a nun adressed to the virgin mary.

While I have never seen one adressed to God I wouldn't be suprised if I did.

That's very interesting. What address did she use for the Virgin Mary? And do you think it was really from a nun?

reply

I remember that it was back in December of 1999. The post card had a picture of Mary. There was no address.

It was signed Sister something and she was thanking Mary for protecting us all these years and that she hoped she would keep doing so in the next millenium.

My guess is people who send letters to God, Mary or whatever supreme being they believe in know that their letters will never reach its destination. But sometimes when you are going trough a rough time it helps putting your feelings and toughts on a piece of paper and the fact that they know that someone somewhere will read it is somewhat comforting.

Thanks for the recollection! That's a very sensitive, caring theory about why people send letters to God, and I think it makes sense.

Some might find it easy to dismiss someone who writes letter to God as crazy, but in many ways, it's probably therapeutic -- like writing your thoughts in a journal, then taking it to the next step.

Because you work for the post office, I now am convinced that people actually do write letters to God. It seemed like more of a gimmick for a movie, but I'm no longer skeptical. Thanks again for the response!

Here's a joke I thought you might appreciate, courtesy of Beliefnet.com:

A Letter Addressed to God

A letter written in a childish scrawl came to the post office addressed to "God". A postal employee, not knowing exactly what to do with the letter, opened it and read: "Dear God, my name is Jimmy. I am 6 years old. My father is dead and my Mom is having a hard time raising me and my sister. Would you please send us $500?" The postal employee was touched. He showed the letter to his fellow workers and all decided to kick in a few dollars each and send it to the family. They were able to raise $300.A couple of weeks later the same post office received a second letter addressed to God. The boy thanked God for the recent infusion of cash, but ended with this request: "Next time would you send the money directly to us? If you send it through the post office they deduct $200."

and then the postal workers got fired and arrested for opening the letter! LOL

reply

Yeah, right, because opening God's mail is a cosmic offense!

In Jerusalem, there are people who leave letters to God in a huge wall.
Sometimes people come and read them, and answer the prayer of the writer.
The people who read the letters, don't have to do anything, but isn't it nice to know someone read the thoughts.

Overall I think such things are sweet.

Yes, people do. And there is one postal worker at the dead letter office in Atlanta that answers letters to God. Part of her job. :)

Kids write to Santa all the time.

I used to work for the USPS, my husband is a letter carrier. The USPS was prepared to back this movie until they read the script. They still let them use the facility to film in, and costumes, but didn't give it their 'stamp of approval,' as it were, because of references to going postal. (Which, of course, is a fallacy--yes, there were some shootings years back, but considering they are in the top 5 employers in the US, compared to other work place shootings/per capita of the company, it's really rather low).
