In this movie Darkman is a complete dick who doesn't care about anybody. In the so called "second film" he is a crime fighter and sh_t. I think he learns to feel again in this one (as shown when he goes to the girl's play and when he saves her the trouble of being a disfigured freak) and goes on to become a crusader for good as seen in The Return of Durant.

That's my theory anyway. And I'm only half-joking. I honestly almost believe this.

This IS atually the second one. It was filmed before "Return of Durant". The producers capitalized on Larry Drake's return to the Durant role, and made it the second one. But "Return of Durant" is actually the third film.

It actually makes more sense this way. I wish they would have just released the movies in the order they were filmed.

You're actually correct. This is the actual first sequel to the original, but they pushed it back after Larry Drake became available to reprise his role as Durant, so ROTD became part 2, but it's actually the third film in the trilogy. Chronologically speaking, the films go in this order:

Darkman
Darkman III
Darkman II
