Chow shows me love

I have been trying to catch up to Stephen Chows work ever since the first time a friend from Indonesia burned me the original copy of Shaolin Soccer. I knew Mr. Chow had something that I hadn't seen in any American actor and became hooked after the first 20 minutes of the movie. since then I have seen most of his movies that are currently available to American audiences at the top of my BB & Netflix cues.

Although this movie is no different from Chows other works in the fact that he plays the underdog that rises above the situation to become the hero that saves the day, this movie does show me a side of him that I had not seen in any of the movies I have watched from the Chow catalog. True love. Every leading man has a leading lady, and Chow is no different, although some of his movies seem to have no love interest at all. but this one does. in fact, he's actually married in this one and his love for his wife shines through more then any other emotion this movie gives us. in fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he and Carina Lau weren't having some sort of fling while filming this. Throw in the usual Kung-Fu, slap-stick, and great supporting cast and you have another winner! in fact, the only movies I have watch that i didn't care for were the Fight Back to School series but I wont completely blame Chow for those. I didn't HATE them, i just thought they were his weakest of the bunch.

for some reason this movie just made me happy. it made me laugh just as much as King of Comedy and the Royal Tramp series, yet I never hear anyone talking or discussing it. If you made it to this lonely board my mistake, please do yourself a favor and rent this movie! definitely buy it (if you can find it) if you're a fan of Chow.

Brian, there's a message in my AlphaBits. It says "OOOOOO".

It's indeed unusual to see a protagonist in a film married right away from the beginning of the film. But since this film deals with marital transgressions I suppose it had to be that way. Now, I have only seen Chow's 3 more recent films, this is the first of his older ones that I have managed to find. However it was much more interesting than I would expect. As far as the romance, I liked the romance in "Shaolin Soccer" as well, but this was different here and equally as good. The romance makes these 2 somewhat better to me than "Kung Fu Hustle" or "CJ7."

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

The romantic scenes between Fat and his wife were unique to me as well. Usually you'll see an older married couple or someone who wants to force someone to marry them.
