Serious decline in talent between D2 and D3

Isn't it funny how in D2 they were a good enough team to be world champions and then shortly after in D3 they're not even good enough to make varsity at their school?

reply

That is actually pretty intresting

I always think about that when I think about D3. I guess Eden Hall is just that good?

reply

Yup, it's a common complaint about the movie. In the 2nd they're playing to be the best in the world, and in this the big final game is an in-school match between the older and younger kids. Big whoop, they're already world champs!

Exactly. Those kids are OLDER and bigger.

Did I miss something here? In D3 they're playing kids 4-5 years older, in D2 they're playing kids their age. VoilĂ .

reply

That is exactly right. In D2 they are Pee Wee's which is primarily 12 year olds maybe a few 13. A high school freshman is what, 15/16? The varsity team would be 17/18 year olds. Beating other 12 year olds is completely different than taking on 18 year olds.

I would say those guys on Team Iceland had to have been the same caliber/age if not higher than the EH Varsity, especially given their size. But keep in mind, there was a different playing style on the international stage vs the high school stage. International competition is stricly based around sportsmanship and honor, whereas the context of facing the varsity was quite different. It was definitely more personal, especially if that matchup was intentionally favored towards the varisty because they were already the local/state hotshots and favorites; as if they were pre-entitled to certain things.

Not to mention they also had to deal with the tutelage of a new coach who had a brand new style of playing. Orion actually had a more decorated/experienced hockey record than Bombay, having been an NHL veteran who actually played with the grownups and knew what it means to be in the business of sports rather than merely playing for love of the game.

I always thought it made less sense that a team that went from being so bad that they didn't even have uniforms goes to being the best team in the country in a 2-3 month period.

They went from being bad to the best in the local league in their city in a couple months, not best in the country. And for the sequel, it was really about the choice of coach that got them in to be Team USA, there were probably many better teams in America.

There's an episode of South Park where Kyle coaches of team of little kids (like 5-6 year olds) in hockey. They get good enough to make it to the finals but then for whatever reason I can't remember, they are pitted against the Detroit Red Wings, and all the kids are horribly bloodied and beaten.

Anyone that's gone through sports leagues growing up knows just a few years difference in age can be night and day. The best 14-15 year olds in America could be crushed by an average team of 17-18 year olds. JV Being able to beat their varsity team is a big upset.

To be fair Adam Banks carried them in the first film once they got him. If they hadn't recruited him no way in hell would they have reached the finals. They were decent before getting him once they trusted Bombay but they weren't that good to get all the way to the Hawks if it wasn't for Banksy. I wouldn't say Banks carried them in D2 and D3 but again his presence on both teams in those films was still a big reason why they went far. He was the only one good enough that got varsity in D3 and even the Warriors acknowledged his skill more than once. It's like I said in another thread here the kid was basically the next Gretzky so he contributed much to the Duck's success in all three films.

It does make sense though because Goldberg says they don't really practice & Bombay asks Averman if they practiced in the off-season, plus the Dcusk are freshmen (maybe some sophomores) playing against a varsity 10-straight state champions hockey team in MN. high school hockey in MN is a big deal

reply

This is right. The best HS team in America is almost certainly in Minnesota. This fictional team dominated the state league. If they were real, they would be a feeder for the Olympic team.

The Euro game is also more "finesse". North American players are more physical. This would amplify the competitive advantage for older kids.

reply

geez you people are slow, in D2 they are not in high school, they are probably 12-13 years old competing n the JUNIOR olympic games.
