what do YOU think ever happened to Abigail. . .

What do you think ever happened to her after she left Salem on that boat headed to (the place starts with a B but I don't remember what it is called)????

reply

The play tells us at the end of a brief oversight of the characters futures after the trials that "The legend has it that Abigail turned up later as a prostitute in Boston" Hope this helps :)

Thanks, that does help
I was hoping that she found peace (but I think thats only because Winona Ryder played her in the movie hehe)

reply

She went to shoplift at a store only to be caught and convicted.

Wait, that's Winona Ryder. Whoops.

I think she made it to the Caribbean with the stolen money and enjoying the fruits of her sins. There she is living in peace and harmony until the end of her days – still puzzling what got Proctors wife what she not had…

It's only after we've lost everything that we are free to do anything

reply

She became a prostitute in Boston three years after her disappearance and died.

blackcrowef2004, by any chance, was the place you were talking about Barbados?

I am your angel, come to me angel of music.

My English III teacher told me that Abigail and Mercy ran away on a train headed to Boston and there became prostitutes at the age of 17. Ironic huh that earlier in the play Procter called her a "whore!"

reply

Also they didn't have trains back then.

reply

Oh bravo! How witty shutup_poof....

The Abigail mentioned in 'Echoes down the corridor' at the end of the play's text is the real Abigail Williams (aged 12) in the hostory of the Salem trials. Fundemental to the understanding of the play is that Abigail-fiction is left undecided. Remember, when we see the play we do not have the 'Echoes' nor the back stories; to the audience she is victorious.

if u read the play it says says that she became a whore. of course, *became* is not the most accurate word u can use here!
people a cornier movie i saw was probably the "iron angles". its about bunch the psuodo-socialist/feminist who try to "get the votes". at the the end i wanted to puke.

P.S.

I'm quoting a post above:

What sort of a teacher would suggest there were trains in that age????

reply

Yep... thats right... in english ive read the book it has been told that... "the lengend has it that Abigail turned up later as a prositute in boston. it has written and said in the novel after act 4 in the book. you should read it...

reply

You have to remember that Arthur Miller took some poetic license with the story and reading though these i remembered finding somewhere for school work that Abigail was only 12 or so and Proctor at least 60, meaning the relationship that existed between them probably isnt accurate historically (it makes for a damn good play though!!) .
I really love the play , im not trying to nitpick or be rude about it.
I found the website I got that bit of information from its

UPDATE: sorry, just realised there was a whole thread about that already! sorry if ive wasted anyones time

Nope, there weren't trainst in the 17th century. The answer as to what happened to Abigail Williams (in real life at least) is that she confessed ten years after the trials she did not see specters or the devil, but did not say why she made her accusations. She died in her mid 30's having never married. Fitting.

reply

BTW she lived out her life in Salem, forgot to mention that. I'm taking a class about hte trials, really interesting stuff.

reply

I think she became a prostitute according to the back of the book...

reply

Umm, being a prostitute is pretty *beep* And I think back in those days prostitutes barely lived to be like 30. I remember reading something about houses they would use to have for prostitutes to go and live until they died at like 30 back then because that's as old as they lived or something ridiculous. I wish I could remember where I read it then I could figure out this stuff for sure.

reply

She went on to have affairs with many men, but always left them and denied she ever had a relationship with them.

reply

OK we wathced a thing on a History Channel video tape in class which was slightly freaky. Anyway, I think I remember it talked about how she was a prostitute later in life. And the place starting with B was probably Boston.

Well, she brought it on herself. If she hadn't made false accusations then maybe she would have married someone in Salem and made a good life for herself. I guess her conscience was pricking her and never gave her peace
