One of the Predecessors of The Matrix

Different dimensions, bad guys in suits, an young man who doesn't realize his mission, a girl who bring him into reality, the scene when the Very Bad guy and Young Hero push themselves onto the walls...
Nice film, indeed.

Just saw this film on HBO. The similarities between this movie and The Matrix are astounding. I can't believe I'd never heard of this one.

I know this is an old thread, but you guys make it sound interesting. I just saw it is coming on HBO tonight, and thought I would check here first, and from what I saw at first I wasnt going to watch it...but you guys comparing it to the Matrix has me intrigued!

reply

Your name has me intrigued. My wife was so into that Horatio guy right around the time Fantastic 4 came out. She netflixed the whole series. It was quite annoying. It was all she talked about, so I coined the show, "Horatio Cornholer". This, in turn, made her pretty angry.

Hi,

I don't believe the Matrix was another dimension, a Virtual World sure but it's an important distinction (unless Rutger had a whole mess o' wires coming out of the back of his head that I couldn't see...)

You may have been thinking of the Lawnmover Man (chortle)

Alright smartass, he didn't literally mean they both had multiple dimensions. The change back and forth between the real world and the matrix seemed quite similar to crossworlds. The similarities go beyond petty specifics, and are too numerous to be ignored. Rutger parallels Morpheus, in that he is wise, strong, independent, and comes off as kind of an *beep* at times. Nearly every character, mentioned above and not, lines up pretty damn well with a Matrix counterpart.

The three character dynamic:

1. Ordinary Guy
2. Girl who brings him into the new world
3. Mentor

is similar to the Matrix. And Wanted.

I haven't killed a man since 1984

Of course there are also specific scenes that have pretty direct parallels in The Matrix -- as for example when Joe wakes up in bed like Neo does after his interrogation.

I have to agree... it's ridiculous...

"There is no spoon" - "Believe in the floor"

Disappearing right when about to be run over by truck.

One of those weird coincidences. But in any case it's done badly - no chemistry between characters, a lot of characters refusing to explain things to each other, and general shabbiness of everything.
