Movie is a distorted piece of crap

The things the director and the writer left out of the movie are shameful. Hauptmann wasn't the good person that was portrayed in the movie and there was more than enought evidence to convict him beyond a reasonable doubt. I am against capital punishment, but don't use this guy as your poster boy.

Hauptmann was a escaped convict from Germany.

Hauptmann did 4 years in prison for robbing two women at gunpoint.

Hauptmann's handwriting was also compared by numerous experts to samples of his handwriting before he was caught and even to handwriting that he wrote while on death row and it was identified as being written by the same man that wrote the ransom notes and even has some of the same mistakes in spelling.

Hauptmann was identified as having a condition which caused him to switch certain letters that didn't have anything to do with english being his 2nd language. He exhibited some of the same mistakes in his writings of the german language that the kidnapper did in the ransom note.

Hauptmann robbed a house in Germany and entered the house from a 2nd floor window with the same type of ladder.

Hauptmann quit his job two days after the ransom money was delivered at the height of the depression. He never worked again.

Hauptman bought a $400 radio after the ransom money was delivered. He sent his wife to Germany for a month to see if it was alright to come back to germany even though he was an escaped convict from the country.

An Accountant went thru his finances(Hauptmann kept a list of his expenditures, too) and found that he had lost thousands of dollars thru his stock accounts and when added to his expenditues and the money found in his garage it added up to an amount pretty close to the $50,000 ransom total.

Part of the ladder matched the holes and the missing piece of wood from the attic. There wasn't any evidence that the wood had been tampered with by the police.

He had part of the money hidden in his garage inside a secret compartment.
He fit the description of the man passing around the lindbergh ransom money in new york.

Scotland Yard predicted the intials of bruno richard hauptman before he was caught based on the symbol he left on the ransom note.

A expert on wood traced the wood in the ladder to the lumber yard that Bruno Hauptman had previously worked at and was located near his house before he was caught.

The wife of the owner where hauptmann's wife worked was robbed shortly before the ransom money was finally delivered to the kidnapper. She said that the robber hid his face with his coat and hat, but she thought that she recognized him as Bruno Hauptmann. The reason that she didn't say anything was because she saw no point once he was arrested for the lindbergh kidnapping.

I'm glad someone said it - this guy was guilty.

Double Hawk! "I'm awkward"

I saw a documentary where they showed that there was also a piece of wood from the ladder that fit exactly into the space where there was a missing floorboard in Hauptman's house.

I have never heard some of those points raised before that the OP mentions (and don't recall them brought out at trial) - just curious as to the source. I have read The Airman & the Carpenter by Ludovic Kennedy on which the movie was based and I don't recall some of those points being raised while others of those were debunked - it was a long time ago I read it so I can't recall everything but it's very well written and worth reading if you can find it.
