Meg Ryan as a soldier is a joke

When you hear about a casting beforehand, you sometimes think that it's bad (like Anne Hathaway in Dark Knight Rises). But then you watch it and you find it not so bad. Well, in this case, Meg Ryan as a soldier does sound bad and it doesn't get better when you see the movie.
Denzel and Diamond Phillips were good but the movie is kind of a waste time, sorry to say.

it's called character growth.

You want to play the game, you'd better know the rules, love.

does she have to be G.I. Jane to be believable? she was a helicopter pilot. and she had to basically play the same scene over and over in a completely different way according to how each of the other characters were telling it. not trying to say her acting was good or bad, but i don't see how you can't believe her being in that situation. she just made the decision to provide cover fire while the rest of her crew made it to safety. why is that hard to believe?

I would have loved to have served under an officer like her while I was in the Army! People who "assess" military movies, yet have never served our country, have worthless opinions! It's insulting to me to even have to respond to arm chair warriors!

What utter nonsense.

First, you're saying that military movies are similar to actually BEING in the military. Laughable! But more importantly, you contend that those who haven't served can't even have opinions about films that deal with the military! That's like saying a person can't have an opinion on ANY film unless they've graduated film school! Ridiculous! I guess because I haven't served, I'm not allowed to believe that Pauly Shore's "In The Army Now" is a piece of *beep* Come on!

For somebody who claims to have served, and was sworn to protect the rights of fellow citizens, you sure have some funny notions on what kinds of opinions citizens are allowed to have. You don't have to agree with them, but they most certainly aren't "worthless". We're talking about movies, not real world combat strategy! Your statements are BEYOND insulting and your logic totally twisted.

And all this just because you happen to like MEG RYAN in "Courage Under Fire"?!?! Not the kind of film I'd get worked up about. It's hardly a classic, or a great performance from her. In fact, I agree with the OP. I thought Meg Ryan sucked in this. Her Southern accent and line readings were so forced and phony, I couldn't even concentrate on what was happening in her scenes. Oh, but wait a minute! Because I haven't served, I'm not ALLOWED to have that opinion! My opinions are not just meaningless, they're totally worthless!

Whatever. I thought this was America.

What does that have to do with anything? Being in film school let's you point out the wrongdoings of direction, lighting, props, not whether or not someone fits a role. Idiot.

"That dude obviously wasn't muscular enough to play the Hulk, but then again I can't judge because I haven't been to film school!"

I suggest you learn what a metaphor is. This thread is about stereotyping, not degrees in film making.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about anything, but it makes me chuckle when people think that their opinion is the end-all, be-all authority of a subject. In this particular instance I know 3 women who serve in the British Army and they don't look like female Arnold Schwarzeneggers, they have no visible muscles, yet any one of them can kick my ass backwards.

When you forget stereotypes and learn to form your own opinions rejoin IMDB...

You don't know sh!t, Jon Snow!

I don't know about that. I've never been to the moon, but when I see something strange in a movie about going to the moon, I'm going to say something.

There were definitely times when her acting like a soldier was a distraction, like when she tries to do a facial movement when she's being commissioned, but other than that sort of thing, I don't think she did so bad as an actress portraying a soldier.

Why is she 'a joke' as a soldier? Soldiers come in all shapes & sizes. Have you ever served?

reply

Just becuz she normally does Rom-Coms doesn't mean she cant play a soldier. I thought her performance was great. Also, ppl get way too hung up on accents & history. No one ever said this story was 100% true. Still great though just the same.
