why do people say he should have "chosen Margot"?

He DID choose Margot. she rejected his every advance. She claimed she was unavailable.

honestly I question what we are actually supposed to think about her. Did she really have a lover returning to her?
remember when she questioned whether his girlfriend Lena was a real person and even said the photo proved nothing.

well, did she have any proof?

Did the writer give her a sort of a Freudian slip?

We will never know, however it was mentioned that they may meet again vacationing.

Interesting point concerning the non existence of his boyfriend.

Margot did not seem to know what she wanted. She was clearly attracted to Gaspard, otherwise I don't believe she would have stopped him at the beach and chatted with him. She even chased him up. Then, she kisses him and leaves him like that ... she was lucky Gaspard didn't get angry with her, playing with him like that. And then she had that jealousy crisis over Gaspard when it was clear he couldn't expect anything from her. Couldn't believe it.

She was an interesting person to chat with but not a love interest. Plus, I'd say she was number three physically speaking.

Well, he chose her after telling her a bunch of times that she was just a friend and that he had other girls on his mind. Not the best way to sweep a lady off her feet. I think she is attracted to him but sensed that he might not be mature enough at this point to be a good boyfriend.

(I do agree that her boyfriend's apparent return at the end seemed a little too convenient.)

You make a good point bringbackberniew. Never thought of it to be honest but you're on to something. The fact that she questioned Gaspard's girlfriend raises suspicions on her own boyfriend. She seemed like very insecure after all; she could've easily made her boyfriend up.

My view of why Gaspard didn't end up with Margot is based on my experiences with me and my friends when we were in our 20s.
- To me Margot was more mature than Gaspard by several years. (In the movie it is mentioned that Gaspard believes that he will straighten out his life when he reaches 30.)

Margot was checking Gaspard out. She was available (her "boyfriend" was half way across the ocean).
She decided that Gaspard was not for her as a boyfriend because he was too indecisive. But he was interesting as a friend.
Margot could see that Gaspard was in a deadend relationship with Lena (who was on vacation somewhere else while Gaspard waited). So Margot decided to push Gaspard in the direction of Solene who was ready for someone new.
And with Solene's take charge style, Margot figured that Gaspard could learn some things about love.

But when Lena returned and Gaspard wanted to dump Solene, Margot realized that Gaspard wasn't ready for any kind of relationship.
Lena was insulting Gaspard as not being good enough and Lena was again changing their plans. But Gaspard was sticking to Lena.
But also Gaspard could not tell Solene the truth and made a date to see her.

So, in the end Gaspard stands up two women and runs off to get a tape recorder. (I'm a musician and I understand that situation but he should have been honest with the women and not left them waiting.)

Margot saw all of that. Why would Margot who was level headed want to be with Gaspard?
I see no reason. Maybe some day when Gaspard becomes more mature but not yet.

Very good movie BTW in how 'real' it felt in describing the life of a shy, intellectual guy.

BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

Margot is the type of person who likes and gets along with everyone and likes being with people. That's why she's an ethnologist, and a waitress. Gaspard is introverted and to her kind of an unusual person, which intrigues her. So she is tempted by Gaspard. At the same time she is half in and half out of a relationship with another guy. He's been far away for a long time. Is he really coming back to her? Who knows. It's kind of a Schroedinger's Cat situation. She doesn't know if her relationship is alive or dead. So it's not surprising that the half of her that doubts tries to be with Gaspard, but the half that is sure of the faraway boyfriend is telling her not to.
