Third Man

Some of these scenes reminded me of scenes in the Third Man.
A man and woman walking away from a funeral.
A man and woman meeting in a diner in a train station.

Good point, esp. since three of the movie's creators are very respected, well-versed screenwriters and/or journalists who could very likely be making an homage to The Third Man (1949). Otherwise, unfortunately, I think there is almost no other good reason for that flat, bogus diner scene to exist in this film.

I felt a bit sorry for Bridget Fonda in this film. Her character isn't in a huge number of scenes and never seems to have the opportunity to develop much, but yes...the scenes she's in, are as you described this one; flat and purely functioning to develop Kevin's character. I really don't blame her for getting up and walking out.
