Did anyone else think Laura Dern was stellar?

she is so good playing this part. The strength is in her facial expressions and body language as she watches all the other weird characters. She is arguably the biggest "outcast" but it's like she's in a zoo walking around watching all the crazy animals in their cages. Perfect match of character and actor.

i agree with you, but i always love laura dern in anything.

She should have won an oscar for this role, she was amazing! Played the parts with equal parts humanity and humor!

She was terrific. Just PERFECT. PERFECT.

Totally captured a gluehead. Totally.

Agree totally.

I loved her in this. I've always liked Laura Dern, but her performance here was flawless. I'm just surprised I hadn't seen this movie until now.

I'd like it if they liked us, but I don't think they like us

I think anybody that saw the movie would agree that she was excellent in it. I think if this movie came out in 1997 instead of 1996 it might have earned her an Oscar nod. Unfortunately, 1996 was the year when independent movies took over the Academy Awards and sadly, "Citizen Ruth" was forgotten. Always thought Laura Dern would become a bigger star as well in more mainstream movies (or shinning in other great indies).

She's steller in everyting she does.

Yeah; I would never have imagined her to be capable of convincingly playing a drug addict, but she pulled off the part really well.

Dern is obviously an amazing actor. She even managed to elevate Jurassic Park.

But I agree. This is arguably her most fearless performance.

Hey Aztec_Camera. This is a great performance, and like others in this thread, I believe she's one of our best actors. I assume you feel the same. You mention that you feel:

"This is arguably her most fearless performance."
I can understand that opinion. It is fearless. However, have you seen Inland Empire? In my opinion, as great as Dern is in Citizen Ruth, nearly nothing compares to what she does in Inland Empire. it's one of the great screen performances in the history of cinema. It's up there w/ anything: Penn in Hurlyburly, Keitel in Bad Lieutenant, Liz Taylor in Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, doesn't matter. Dern in Inland Empire is unsurpassed.

However, let me warn anyone who hasn't seen it: it is epically horrifying, brutal, disturbing, and brilliant. Truly engaging in this film takes a lot of personal will and energy, and it will kick your *beep* ass. Proceed with caution.
