So ultimately what kind of character is Morgan Freeman's?

I.e your analysis of the enigmatic character he plays in said film.

He is some CIA agent, therefore little mysterious.
But poor character development of movie, and not only his, allowed not knowing more about characters.
I say CIA because: it was clear at ending that they came to pick-up him, after police was on to bust him.

He would be a top placed analyst.

His job would be to seek out trends/research that may benefit the country and keep them under government control.. but without being seen to collar and leash the researchers.

If a trend is worthwhile then he would set up the structures (C Systems) to push it further in a manner not to raise too much suspicion. After all C Systems would have cost a fortune and it would be difficult to pass THAT under Congress without a lot of objections/clauses/protests from Senator all trying to 'get a piece of the action'

As a person - he will take the hard decisions including "wet work" if necessary.. however unlike Lyman he sees that as a last resort.

Is he Kind??? Well he prefers NOT to be Cruel. I don't know if he authorised the death of the professor but somehow I think that that was all Lymans idea.
