Yes he was. I can see where he was coming from as far as the scientific explanations etc., but there's nothing wrong with a little fantasy and imagination now and then. He was also incrediby disrespectful to the Duke and Lord Canterville in his own house. He's a guest in that country and he's not really providing the best of impressions about Americans.
