The Honeymoon creature a Windigo?

I haven't seen this movie since I was thirteen but that segment has stayed with me for six years. In the second episode of Supernatural they focus on Windigos and it got me wondering if that's what these things were.

Basically they were once human beings who had committed cannibalism and transformed into a creature called a Windigo (or was possessed by a Windigo, legends differ). They lived in the woods and preyed on humans. They were said to be very fast and always ravenous.

The only thing that seems to be different from the traditional Windigo legend is that the legends say Windigos look like skeletons, with skin stretched over bones and sunken eyes. I don't remember these things looking like that.

So, any opinions? Do you think that's what they were, or at least where the inspiration came from?

They kind of reminded me of the people/mutants from The Hills Have Eyes.

Obviously THHE wasn't made until after this movie. I think the writer just had an idea that there are people like them out there.
