Is it just me or do people like this movie a lot more now than when it was first released?

I remember right after this film was released a lot of people didn't seem to like this movie very much, then in the recent years a lot of people seem to have warmed up to this film.

It was hilarious at release. Falls into line toward the end, but, it had danced on the wire the entire way till then.

His father (George Segal) is great= "You know you're killing your mother." "Are you on the pot?"

The karaoke scene is legendary. The jousting scene as well.

Carrey steals some scenes, but, that's him.

I've thought the first half of the movie was good but it got a little too dark and unnerving for me to watch during the second half, I was also expecting another lighthearted Jim Carrey movie and while I do enjoy a dark comedy every now and then but I just couldn't enjoy the second half of this movie.

Though the film definitely isn't 'lighthearted', it is still just a goofy, fun (albeit sorta dark) movie. I think that's what they were going for. It kinda works and it kinda doesn't. If you can embrace the ridiculousness, you will find great joy in this dumb funny film. It's not perfect, but it is something special...in its own wierd way, haha

"I was also expecting another lighthearted Jim Carrey movie"

I think this is the best explanation as to why people like this more now. After Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber, people wanted more of the same from Jim Carrey. When they got something different many were disappointed (I kinda was). Later when I watched again on DVD I found myself enjoying it a lot more.

Like Adam Sandler movies, I loved every Jim Carrey movie from about the year 2000 and earlier. After that, they only had a couple movies that weren't too bad, but still lacked the ridiculous spirit of the early movies.

I didn't like it much when it first released, but it ended up growing on me when it was on over and over again on TBS in the early to mid 2000's and that channel was my background noise of choice. I still don't think it's great though.

It probably has to do with how much movies suck ass nowadays.

I liked it back in the day but I wouldn't call it a "great" film or anything. But it has some entertainment value. The rating on Rotten Tomatoes is way too low though. It's currently rated a 54. Nahhh... it's better than that. it's at least a 64.

I remember when it was released and the hoi polloi wanted a straight forward slapstick comedy from Jim Carrey, not a dark comedy with nuance. Critics blasted it.

But as is often the case, critics were wrong and those who love his film have been vindicated. Truth will out.
