it kinda seems like he was gay in the movie...

sure was. prison turned him. he liked those guys on top of the block of apartments at the projects, and also when he scored with the hot latino chick, laura, he couldn't get it up!! any red blooded male would not have had that problem.

reply

varsania, its called heroin, not being a homo in the case of the girl

reply

are you stupid.this is the stupidest.you cant turn gay.if you are hetero and you go to jail you cant come out gay.

reply

He wasn't gay in the movie. If he was gay he wouldn't have taken the spanish girl up to the room in the first place.
As for the two guys on the roof, he was just trying to freak them out while taking their clothes so they couldn't come after him.

reply

yeah he wasnt gay, he was just *beep* with people, you have to be pretty secure with your sexuality to pretend to wanna have sex with some guys on top of a roof

reply

Oh please. do you really expect Butchie to be scared of those kids? do me a favour.

reply

As i recall it, rourkes character accused Lester of being gay.
As he was using heroin, he couldnt get it up with that girl.

reply

He must've been bi-curious or something lol.

I'm just here to kick azz, sleep till noon. http://longnorthhorn.wordpress.com/

reply

Err.. He had a pic of a young Tony Curtis in his jail cell. Nuff said. Incontrovertible evidence.

reply

Please...if anyone was gay it was Lester!
Look at the threads he wore! Those shades he had on when he was picking up Butch in his mom's car...yikes! Those were women's shades 100%!

This movie was a bit too much with the gay overtones. Especially with that 'prison b*tch' type analogy, then again, alot of people in the 'real world' (office world, office gosip) fall into this category, so in a wierd way it works, contemporary wise, in the 'working' world (as in, everyone plays 'b_tch' at some point in one's life to another (except Dick Cheney). But no, only Lester was the closet runner here, Butch was just used by the system (prison) and spit out, go even farther with the heroin, and that's why he couldn't 'get it up' with that sexy chicana (which I think is the hidden reason he was on the suicide course he took). Still man.. a great statement of life in the urban wastelands..

Actually,

Butch was most likely transformed into a homosexual from prison - Reasons being:

1.He wasnt just makeing the kids strrip on the roof, was was undoing his own belt and pants when Ruby came on the roof, also his reply to Lester when asked if they were gonna rob or F--- them, "whats the difference"

2. At the dinner table, he makes a comment about a young "Cherry" getting broken in who thinks hes tough - probably talking about others as well as himself coupled directly with Louis' quote about death before dishonor...If we are talking about prison and dishonor - what else could it mean? - we know he wont punk out of a fight, and he didnt rat out his boy to get less time, ,what other dishonor could there be right?

Also, he's almost coming on to lester at the house before they go rob the neighbors - its half joking, but he's probably half serious too.

He reflects the obvious signs of what he sees in Lester as gay, since hes the pretty boy flamboyant type, and he himself is too hard to be gay - but the film shows all the other events to make it obvious its Butch who is a latent Homo - The scene with the girl may be due to the drugs, or it may be him trying to establish himself as a man while deep down hes been changed since prison and isnt aware or ready to admit it yet. Why keep showing the flashback scenes with all the guys in prison.

Mickey Rourke also co-wrote this film and probably like to dual portrayal of a bad ass who might have problems admitting he is partially gay. He played a similar role in fall time as gangster bank robber who was implied gay also (the similarities end there between films though)

one other thing, I think lester was in a war, just not vietnam like everyone states. Of course now hes nuts, no questions - But, he specifically talks about killing arabs in lebanon (could have been the 80's), and the cops make mention of saying the war is over to mess with him...and he states "Ive noticed" as a response - if he is a schizo who thinks he was a soldier, hed probably thinks he's still involved in some kind of war as well, hence the need for all the artillary, be he is well aware of his state, and the use of his weapons - the stun gun for home invaders, not enemy soldiers. Also, if he was never any kind of soldier, the cops probably would have ragged him about beihng a paranoid loon who never did time.

He mentions Vietnam and Marine Recon after the detectives screw around with him. While he was a Marine, he could've also fought in Israel as many Jewish Americans have done before. Warfare in general has screwed him up as it has many fighters from any side.

I'd agree on all of your positions though. While it's alluded to in the film, they're obviously repressed homosexuals. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just another aspect that added strain to their lives as I'm sure it does for most homosexuals.

reply

He also mentions that he "has'nt busted a nut in eight years" just before he takes the Latina woman to the motel. If he's so gay, than why has he not had sex in eight years? It's somewhat implied at dinner that he's been raped, but that is'nt consentual, therefore he's not gay. The rooftop thing was an extreme 'prison style' method of scaring some new punks. If he were gay he would'nt have even tried to lay the chick from the club. I think Lester was the homo in the film.

reply

no, he wasnt a fag at all. as directed by him in the film he said to his dad across the table "Doesnt matter how bad you think you is if those *beep* want you They'll get you". Meaning exactly just that. You better watch this movie a few more times before asking whos a fag.

reply

who do you think hes talking about when he says this? The dinner table conversation was to, with, and about butch. Who else would he be talking about when he says

"Doesnt matter how bad you think you is"

-Ruby, Lewis, their mom? Butch is the only one who "acts" tough, and was in prison, thus the comment is self directed.

Ans the comment about bustin a nut in 8 years was to act cool and impress his younger brother, who, by the way, idolizes him.

Noone ever said he was openly gay. But prison messed with him and he was probably raped, or close to - and subsequently cannot have a sexual relationship with a woman.

Er, who cares? I only caught about 30 minutes of this on TV last night, but it was so dire I had to comment on it here. The scene with the family sitting at the table having dinner ...? The father looked like he'd just walked off a building site, and here he was drinking martinis in this fine old house. Retarded Mickey Rourke down the other end of the table, and a completely clownish looking Adrien Brody in between. Completely ridiculous pap. Then the other, even more retarded brother appears in his underpants (and he's about 40 years old) and starts trying to be even scummier than old Mickey. Was everyone on drugs (director and crew included)?

reply

Bullet was not gay. His cock didn't work because of all the heroin he did. It's supposedly a common side effect of the drug. Bullet explains his limp dick when he's with the spanish girl in the motel room.

reply

He (Butchie) was a least " bi-curious or bisexual" Too many overtones and happenings from his past to not indicate that he was at least " a somewhat of a switch hitter.! Lester couldve been BI as well easily.
