Mark Herman, the director

Mark like me is a Hull City supporter who sometimes posts on one of the Tigers message boards, he was asked about his many references to Hull City in his films.

His homage to the Tigers in Brassed Off is the abundance of black and amber balloons on the bus to London, which of course is the colours of Hull City.

The film, "See you at Wembley, Frankie Walsh" is also about Hull City but was changed to another club to be more recognised

That's probably because he's from nearby Bridlington!

He's a fantastic director, IMHO.

Brassed Off, Little Voice and Purely Belter are three of my favourite movies - Mark is great at encapsulating the grit and humour of North of England folk.

I hope we haven't seen the last of Mr H's 'Northern' genre.

I went to Leeds Polytechnic with Mark Herman. He was in year 3 while I was in year 1 of a film degree course, and I actually house-shared with his girlfriend then. Great bloke with a great sense of humour. He was also lyricist on some of the Christians songs (Ideal World, Hooverville, etc).

OMG how bizarre is that?!?

I love both MH and The Christians but had never made any connection between the 2!

Thank you so much for that brilliant piece of movie trivia!! :D

Here's a link to a short bio page of his.

I must admit ... I didn't know the Nick Park bit ... but I can tell you that Marks' animations (his film school ones from Leeds Polytechnic) were quite brilliant - so I really do doubt that he 'couldn't compete' with Nick Park. Besides - they were different sorts of animation - Mark Herman's were 'drawn' whereas Park uses 'stop-frame'. Mark Herman's 'short' films were really good too. He did a couple to songs from a singer called Hank Wangford. One was Jogging With Jesus and the other was called simply 'I'm a W*nker'.

Incidentally, there are quite a few people on this database who also went to Leeds Polytechnic. Jason Ivimey (animator - who worked on Jurassic Park The Lost World amongst others) was also there and he is a superb animator - he did a lot of the Tetley Tea men adverts and the Kerrygold butter adverts too along with the earlier Ribena Berries adverts. He was (and must still be) a superb animator. Paul Bingley (sound editor is also here) he was in the same year as me - we were really good mates until a few years ago when we lost touch. Paul - if you ever pop in to IMDb - please get in touch.
