the brief second i take my eyes off the screen, i miss the part. when the boys are by the soda machine, how does john's hand get broken? he tries to punch lukas haas? or hits the wall? what??

Did the film actually show John punching the wall and then his hand bleeding afterwards? Or are we supposed to assume that when we see his hand bandaged up later? I saw this scene mentioned in the film reviews and IMDB posts but could not find it in my old VCD. I wonder whether the scene had be cut (censored) in some versions of the film?
