Not good

I love John Tuturro and Sam Rockwell, but this movie is not good. I found it inexplicable that Tuturro's character would just suddenly start acting so out of character. There are a few good scenes but overall, this movie just didn't ring true for me. I understand the underlying message that Al Fountain was looking for the "fountain of youth" and for some reason, found it in Bucky, but I was just like "What the hell is this guy doing?" the entire time I was watching it.

I am sorry to hear that you found it "ungood" and that it made you wonder what the hell he was doing. I saw it as a growth experience for Al. He needed to loosen up. Firecrackers have been known to be dangerous, but he took it too far, and so on.

You might've liked it more if you'd just sat back and enjoyed the flow. I don't think he "just suddenly started acting out of character." He had a revelation and decided to go with it. He'd been so uptight all his life and made a conscious effort to change. I don't think he was looking for the Fountain of Youth, I think he was just wanting to rewind and re-do. I loved this movie!!

Note also that Dicillo stayed consistent even through Al's voluntary leap from his Mr. Clockwork functions. Remember this line: "I'm a married man, I don't just fool around with some girl who 'kinda likes me'." ... It took "an asprin and a little something extra" to get him to dance and commit adultery. Motivation is not a question in this film.

I don't mean to impose, but I am the ocean.

i would guess that the original poster hasn't experienced a "midlife crisis", hence it would be harder to fathom al's motivations.....i think almost from the beginning of the movie, al was heading for a big change, and i suspect he kinda saw it coming....it started with the poker game, and then when his childhood dream was dashed at lake splatchee, he was ripe for new pastures.....i think pretty much everyone has a similar experience at a certain point in their lives - it's inevitable! there is usually a juncture where people re-evaluate where their lives are, and this was it for al....when u get into that mindset and begin realizing your own mortality, u might be surprised at what u would do! so u get it out of your system, and hopefully come thru it with a new respect for life.....

u'll see!

I agree with the original poster.

I'm not sure if it was the low budget, predictable script or just poor production values, but I couldn't find myself connecting to Turturro's character. His transformation really doesn't feel like one at all, and I can't say whether it wa s John's performance or the dry feel of the character that made me wonder how all of a sudden Al Fountain was comfortable out of his own skin. The sex scene was completely unexplained and random, without a gradual succession of events to logically lead up to it. And then at the end, you can see the script struggling to tie the loose ends by giving an idea of character growth, yet Turturro's interpretation still shows him unsure and stiff.

I just feel this movie was very badly produced, directed and, dare I say it, acted to leave me with any sense of care towards the characters. Sam Rockwell was interesting and Katherine Keener was refreshing, but I just thought it was a fairly average B Lifetime movie. And speaking of Lifetime, I had a much more pleasant experience watching "Miracle Run" the other day, which was a really cheesy drama, yet it made me connect with the story and feel for the characters. Much more than "Box of Moonlight" did, for sure.

That said, I'm a big fan of John Turturro and was a bit surprised by his uninspired performance, but, like I said, maybe the script asked for it, so I'm not sure who's to blame.

I agree as well. I'm up for a midlife crisis movie, but I didn't feel that this one was particularly believable or poignant. In the end it would appear that the characters barely changed other than Al Fountain showing a (mild) talent for (mild) mayhem. I don't fault the acting, but I found the situations forced, and the script never more than shallow.

That said, I come here not to rain on anyone's parade. If you enjoyed it, good for you, and I'm sure I've enjoyed things that you haven't. Such is the joy of individual taste.

This, to me, was a beautiful movie that touched my soul. I never have forgotten it after all these years.

the twinkle lights Sam Rockwell has hanging on his "half-trailer" has never ever left my subconscious and I can't even say why. Makes me smile always.
that is good movie-making.

Loved it.

but I guess I looked at it in a more romanticized view....you are probably right about the character inconcistantcies, but to me it doesn't matter. :)

I completely agree. There's something about this movie. It's always a joy when I view it .

sam rockwell is magnificent, (lawn dogs - another favourite) as is john turturro, the music, the story, the magical feel of the movie, it all falls into place brilliantly, the director is a genius!

"I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!"

Well, the point of the film was Al helped Kid grow up a bit, and Kid helped Al loosen up quite a bit; hence, the acting out of character. Sorry your taste in films is lousy. Go watch a Will Smith film or something. LOL.

These pc-obsessed times are getting old.
